Yeah they are very convenient that way. I like the self balance as well.

You wire the balance lead up to servo wire and use the white/yellow signal pin as the balance tap. Then use a charge jack switch and cutoff he signal wire on the RX side. Easy enough to fabricate from JR or MPI switches... also Electrodynamics andNoBS batteries make switches prewired this way.
