Giant Stik... In the Ground

Beautiful day for flying in Orange County NY...
Flying the patern...

Nice and smooth...
Wait... why is the nose going down...
Ummm Why isn't it leveling off...
Ummm Why is the Tx saying telemetry lost...

Does one repair this?
This was my first gas plane, 30cc.
I need to replace it with another 'trainer'

Sticks are typically one of the best overall airplane. They fly stable yet can get wild. I would look into another stick. Hanger 9's stick looks nice. Read the entire threads on it as I recall some people had some issues with them but as I recall it was minor. I believe one complaint was covering but don't quote me on that.

As for your plane, a 30cc is hard to keep your ignition far from your Rx but you have to do it. Also make sure you are using some sort of filter between ignition and Rx if using single battery.

As for rebuilding it, if you are asking I would suggest buying new. If you have the skills to rebuild it then go for it, just know it will most likely be heavier and not fly as well. It would be a good project if you have time on your hand.

Good luck with your next plane.

I am assuming that you are using a Taranis plus x9d. Would you mind sharing what receiver you were using and whether or not your firmware was up to date.

Sounds like a power issue but cannot say for certain.

I believe we are thinking the same thing. Will hold off expressing my thoughts until I see details of the set up.

Good Morning and thanks for all of your thoughtful input.

I bought this plane used ($200 with engine & electroncis) and put my rX in it.
Taranis Plus (2.1.6 firmware) with FrSky X8R rX
There is about 8 inches from ignition to rX
Fuji BT-32EIS engine with a little over an hour of flight time.
I had about 4 flights back in Novemeber before winter set in and all flights were without incident. This was the first flight of the season with a breakin of about 10 minutes before the flight. I did top off the tank.
Futaba servos all around x7
HydriMax 2000 4 cell for servos & 5 cell for ignition

Post Mortum:
Futaba servos were working
HydriMax 2000 4 cell for servos & 5 cell for ignition had near full charges. I toped them off a week ago in anticipation of flying. These came with the plane btw. I did cycle charge them several times before flying it for the first time last year.

Rebuilding:
If it were the END of the season I might be inclined to do it as a project but I want to fly at the moment and not build. I'm on the fence about putting anything into it when I could be investing on something new.

The Hangar9's are on backorder any other suggestions?
I am a relatively new pilot and want something that I can grow with as my skills improve or not as the case may be.

Looking forward to hearing more from you all... Matt

Not trying to start a crap storm but read this and consider it as cause.https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...is-Rx-lock-out

I use Taranis and have never had an issue, I am NOT bad mouthing the product. There is a firmware update that supposedly fixes this. Good luck on your rebuild/new plane.

WOW... sounds to me that this is exactly what happened! Thanks for pointing this out.

If you are able to fly the stick well you might move up to something a bit more capable and better flying. Your $300 budget is slightly low for most of the higher end kits in a 30cc. Look around at some of the mfg's and see if you can possible swing a bit more.

If 300 is a firm limit you can look at Peak Models. I have their 30cc MSX-R that I should maiden soon. The kit quality was pretty good despite costing $199 with free shipping (Black Friday Special).

Today most of the "Scale Aerobatic" planes will fly well and can be toned down to fly pretty easy.

You wont go wrong buying an extra, edge, or yak. This is mostly a "which looks better to me" argument. There are differences in how they fly but if you are still a novice pilot none of that would really matter much.

Thanks for your input Keith.

I have been flying an eFlight Apprentice for some time now with great success and had decided to move up to my next plane last year when the Big Stik sort of fell into my lap.
I was just starting to fly the Stik at the end of last season with great results. While I was buddy boxed for safety reasons and my comfort with flying gas for the first time this year, my 'instructor' is confident in my ability to fly and was hands off. If not for this unfortunate accident, my next flight of the day was going to be off the buddy box.
I do have a HiTec Weekender foamy that I haven't flown because it was a bit too agile for my thumbs and the Stik came around the same time so I never toned down the Weekender to learn how to fly it. I also didn'tt make the investment into more batteries for it vying to concentrate on gas.
I did make this investment into gas and would prefer not to ditch it altogether. In general, I liked flying gas over electric, but I'm a novice and have no real long term experience. Most of my club flies gas. I know that getting into another fully outfitted 30cc for $300 is a bit unrealistic. However, all the parts from my now defunct Stik can certainly go into another one. The question is do I rely on this 'damaged' equipment? The servos are working fine and I believe my issue is simply the bad FW in my rX. Should I be using the engine? The choke intake on the carb was full of grass and I have yet to pull it off the engine and give it a good cleaning.
I would be okay getting into an Extra, Yak, or Edge, as long as it can be tamed down for my skill level. Way too many options to think about...

Sorry to see that happen, but we all have it some time or another. Unless you want a direct 30cc replacement I think you will find this very easy to fly and it will be able to accomodate your growing skills.
