I'm not a big fan of NiMh radio batteries but I would look into the ignition or the plug cap......if you get glitching while the engine is running but it stops when it's not running.....the ignition system is the primary cause for this.

Thanks for your response...
Some have proposed the batteries were the culprit while others have pointed to radio interference. I was going to go with LiFe in my next plane and that should eliminate that problem. What can I do to mitigate the radio interference? I'm hoping that the engine is still good. I've cleaned it out and its ready for an airframe but if this is going to be a recuring problem then I don't want to use it in a new plane.
I am still on the fence about what to get, but if I have to buy an engine that just ups the ante. If I have to buy an engine I was thinking of going with the AGM's, $180 for a 30cc as compared to twice as much for a DLE.

You need to update the firmware in your receiver.

I would also suspect interference from the ignition. The Fuji ignitions were trash and well known for interference. The only way to cure it is to get the SCExcel conversion from Milton at http://www.rcextremepower.net/FujiIgnitions.html

Thanks for your input RoboTech...
I am not inclined to spend any money on this engine. $80 can go towards a brand new engine that wont have these issues.

Follow-up...
I've managed to pick up an Ultra Stick 60 and an Ultra Stick Lite.
Now I need some help in outfitting it.

My thought is to start flying the 60.
Going to put a RCGF 20cc with a 16x8 prop...
Do I buy from Valley (rear exaust) for $209 - https://www.valleyviewrc.com/rcgf-20cc-re-gas-engine
or
HobbyKing (side exaust) for $161 - https://hobbyking.com/en_us/rcg-20cc...hp-1-64kw.html

RCEXL opt switch - https://www.valleyviewrc.com/rcexl-o...witch-with-bec

What battery should I use?

What else...

Your motor will be fine to reuse as will your servos, however I would recommend replacing the RX and new Batteries, Life are Fine I would also recommend running a redundant battery setup that means 2 rx batteries and maybe an ignition bec and eliminate the ignition battery,

Thanks for you response Beverly,
The RCEXL has a BEC. My understanding is that the RCEXL makes it so you don't need to have 2 batteries. I'm not sure I should go with LiPo or LiFe. Someone also brought up the voltage of the servos and the receiver. Does the RCEXL take care of that too?

Thanks,
Matt

Matt you will need a regulator or HV servos if you run LiPo or LiIon, but LiFe is fine unregulated,
I run LiIon and a reg but either way works fine

As a final note I decided to re-build the Ultra Stick Lite (73")
The great folks at Valley View RC helped me pick out electronics.
- RCGF 26cc
- MPI Heavy Duty Charge Switch With LED Voltage Display For 2s LiPo or A123
- RCEXL Opto Gas Kill Switch with BEC
- A123 2300mAh 6.6v Battery

Going with a single battery set-up

Hi Matt,
They are plastic gear servos,
Im not a fan of plastic gear servos on gassers due to potential of the gears stripping due to vibes,

A lot of people (myself included) prefer to run this to help filter the ignition noise.
