Read the last several messages.
IOW; let it warm up for several minutes.

NOW, does it still do the same thing?

Well great news.. The xyz is sweeeeettttt.... After changing out the plugs it's a 5 flick start up when cold, 1 flick once warm..
Personally think it will have as much pull as the dle55 once settled and tuned, and propped right.. Due to the slightly lower top rpm I'm going to try a 23x10.. The xyz only revs to 9k, but has balls.... I'm currently running a 22x12 and it pulls.. Just can't slow it down enough on landings....

More info is needed before anyone can help further.

Stock plug (DLE/3) -or- NGK/CM-6?

What type of ign battery?
4-cell, -or- 5-cell NiMh?
Try another battery?
Li-Ion -or A123/LiFe?

Fuel filter in line?
Is it plugged with junk?

Photos of installation, maybe someone can notice a problem area?

As above, start cheap. Try a new plug. Or clean the points and re gap it.
Find a battery tester, might be charged, but may be stuffed for draw. Unlikely though..

Take a vid and a few picks.

Looks like high needle fuel starvation. Open the needle en extra half turn and see what goes on then. if it is a bit of gum, you can probably return the needle after the engine has run a while.

Has the plane been hot in storage? Oman is not the coolest of places.

I just wanted to say a big "Thank You" to Mark Fuess for his help in this thread. Your tuning steps are awesome. Also "Thanks" to the others on this thread that contributed. I just maidened my 72" Extra with a DLE-30 (my first gasser), and the tuning worked great. She's a little fat on the low end once in the air, but runs great and the plug looks great.

Thanks so much !!!

Mike

pe rivers,

thanks for the feedback, turning the needles was the last thing I wanted to do. because the engine was perfect. I will try to adjust the HIgh needle and see if it makes a diffrance.

I would like to know how will the heat effect the carb setting ?? I store my planes in a store that the max heat in the store reaches 32c.

Heat does all kinds of things. Above all, it speeds up the parts aging factor by 2 for every ten degrees of temperature rise. Think of gum deposits, and aging of the carb membranes.

Hay guys. I have the xyz53 running and running well, But i am getting thick, wet, black smoke runs after a days flying down my fuse. Im guessing to much fuel at top, which has yet to be tuned properly. But i am wondering if a timing adjustment may affect it?
I ask because we mucked around with the timing at the begining when the bugga wouldn't start.. Instead of trying new plugs we adjusted the timing.. so could that be a cause of the execive black soot?

Morning all:

Problem with ZDZ 80 twin and would appreciate help

Motor ran fine for 4 seasons, then it began to exhibit hard starting. Was suggested to rebuild carb, and that made sense, but no kit available for a Bing 29

Found on Internet that a walbro WJ 71 was a good replacement so I purchased one from RC Showcase just before he moved into TBM.

When I installed and attempted to start, nothing, so I got help from the local motor guru, and when our efforts failed he took the motor back plate off and lost the location of the rotary valve.

Long story short I finally sent it to TBM, and they got it running, but idle was at 2000 rpm, and it wouldn't go lower. TBM wasn't any help on the phone and I persisted with it, and eventually have the motor running, but with low speed a tad over 3 turns!

Looking, reading, have a thought that I am that rich to compensate the rotary valve one notch off in the position TBM returned it to, but I'm guessing

I've sent a email to the factory, and even contacted a friend in Germany to help me get them to respond, but no success

It's a great little motor, and like to fly it with my plane, but 3 turns on the low end has me spooked

Any help greatly appreciated

Hi Phantom,

I am just wondering, the rotary valve has a slot for the pin from the big end to engage and that is only one position, at least on the ZDZ80 single. How can you lose the the rotary valve position or have it off by one notcth?
