ARF Scale Aerobatics Racing idea?

I was thinking today at work about a fun way of incorporating aspects of aerobatics and pylon racing into a sort of 'Red Bull Air Race' style competition that is open to a whole range of aircraft and skill levels, whilst requiring the minimum amount of equipment and support crew to run an event...

My idea is to fly a sequence like the one pictured below, against the clock and only using ARF Scale Models. Instead of having multiple classes for different types and sizes of aircraft (sport, aerobatic, warbird etc.) why not adopt a handicap system that brings everyone onto a level playing field without requiring expensive equipment. (handicap based on a measured top speed, maneuverability and previous race results)

For safety a maximum allowable weight/speed should be adopted and probably best to limit it to one person flying at a time (or two/three for an expert class!)

Maneuvers would be judged from 0-4 (0=terrible, 1=not good, 2=OK, 3=good & 4=great) and awarded a one second time bonus for each score. End maneuvers will be awarded an additional time bonus of two seconds if the aircraft passes the flag at or lower than the flag height of 6m. However if a turn or end maneuver commences inside the flags a three second penalty will be given.

The race could effectively be run with only two flags, two hand held radios and two support crew - one timing and calling the maneuvers/turn directions, and the second sitting at the far flag calling on the radio once past the flag and reporting penalties for turning too soon. The more people the better to separate timers/judges from the pilots to keep it fair.

I've tried something similar before with a trainers and had a lot of fun. It's low, it's fast, it requires a bit more skill than just turning left and best of all you don't require any specialised equipment to run an event!

What do people think?

Cheers
Patrick

Re: ARF Scale Aerobatics Racing idea?

I think its a terrible idea! Will be way too much fun and easy to run. I recon we need to make it more complicated so it takes at least 8-10 people to run it with a committee to decide on the results. Count me out. I didnt go out and spend huge money and countless hours practicing so that I could go and have fun flying and actually enjoy myself! AND it looks like you might have to fly low and fast! Bugger that - never will you catch me flying my valuable and expensive models at anything less that 350 feet (tho I never go over 400 feet - that would be illegal!). So lets just stop this nonsense right now so I can go back to crocheting my propeller covers...

Fantastic idea. Easily scaleable for the parkflyers or indoor models too

Edit... also my first post in at least 6 months.

Great idea Moped - might even be able to get some of the Auckland jaffa's to run one of these - then again, it might be too much fun.
Man, you must have WAY too much time on your hands..................

Well if you want to fly your 45% edge on a race track doing aerobatics with a 6m base then be my guest! So long as it is scale and not customised for pylon flying. The idea behind the ARF concept is that it wouldn't upset you so much when you fly straight into one of the poles!! heck we could even open it to heli if you are keen!

Helis? now theres an idea.... COMON BOGAN! Lets get something like this organised. Me and the "wife" will be in without being asked twice. Could even have a go with the odd warbird (no twins please...). I would happily come to Hammy for this, or even get it going here in th' naki. Nice and central so the Wellington guys can make it....
