Just to note that there are a lot of folks that don't use baffling or raised lips, or cooling vents, but instead rely on lots of exit air. that fact is often ignored when this discussion comes up. this has been the case for me over several 100cc and larger airplanes, including a 4 cylinder DLE 222. The SW Slick in my avatar is a friend's and is not baffled. Although I didn't use them, my EF Extra and Edge came with baffles which can be easily glued into the cowl. After studying the airflow from the baffle into the cylinders and comparing it to the overall entry of air into the cowl, I chose not to use them.

My DLE 222 and DA 150 has baffling like what is seen in post 3. But I make my baffling design based on data received from monitoring in flight engine temps. I do not cut my cowl at all. I refuse to and learned that it is not needed. I just use the provided air slots most manufacturers provide in their exhaust tunnels. I also add a piece of triangle stock in front of the air exit to create a low pressure zone that pulls the hot air out. I just added the triangle stock to my AJ123 with a DLE and it dropped 30F peak temps.

I replaced the engine on my 1/4 Taylorcraft with a dle35 and put temperature telemetry on it with the probe on the back of the cylinder. I flew it with no cowl a few flights to tune it and break it in. Cowl on it ran 20 degrees cooler than no cowl.. so if you like your engine baffle it.

On most airframes with a 2 cylinder Boxer engine like an Edge, Extra, etc, it helps but probably not mandatory. On the MXS they really are necessary, because the air does not go through the fins and I have seen the cylinders turn pink on a non baffled plane. I did a fair amount of work on those baffles and they are very effective (~-80F). I added the airfoil inside to increase the air velocity towards the upper part of the jug.

What you are creating is actually what I would love to have. I wish some of the manufacturers would create baffles as an add one purchase/accessory. I believe a couple do or have? |

to expand on something gary said. DA jugs will turn a light shade of pink if the engines are run hot. And that's one way I know that my unbaffled engines are not overheating.
a local pilot was hawking an unseen DA 100L as brand new to any prospective buyers. When the motor finally surfaced it was a nice shade of pink and according to DA had been first sold in 2008. Gary...we had at one time three EF 35% MXSs at our field with DA 120s, and none were baffled. I think Jase said that because the inlets were so big he had not baffled his. The DA 120 that I currently have in my V2 Extra has been in four different EF airplanes, none of them baffled. Just food for thought. |
