250+ MPH Racing Action!!!

The Unlimited Scale Racing Association (USRA) 2018 Race of Champions will prove once again how exciting giant-scale pylon racing can be, with fast action racing and speeds that routinely exceed that of NASCAR and Formula One motor sports. Insanely fast planes (in Unlimited, running on alcohol-fueled 150cc-200cc engines) with straight pipe exhausts. Five of those planes competing in a heat or trophy race is not too far off from the roar of an F/A 18 taking off with an afterburner. Fast planes, great camaraderie and cutting edge innovation.

Once again held this year at California City Airport on October 11-14, the Race of Champions is a test of skills and endurance as pilots keep their airplanes in the running over three days, building to the winner take all championship trophy races held on the final day.

With over $8,000 in prizes and cash purses at stake, pilots and crew compete fiercely, but do whatever it takes to help each other out in the pits to keep all the planes up and running. The heat races leading up to each class’ trophy race are great to watch as each pilot is seeking points to qualify for the trophy races.

Sponsors include APC Propellers, Desert Aircraft, Futaba, Horizon Hobby, Team Extra Air Racing and Tru-Turn.

USRA giant scale air racing is patterned after the Reno National Championship Air Races as a way to bring the excitement, sound, color and history of air racing up close to the public and the world of radio control enthusiasts. Since its inception, giant scale air racing has evolved steadily into a sport where speed and technology advancements know no bounds. Speeds reaching well in excess of 250 miles per hour make giant scale air racing one of the fastest motor sports in the world!

The new class this year is Limited Gas where speeds are anywhere from 170-180mph. with a stock DA150 on pump gas 32:1 redline provided at the race. This class should be a lot of fun!

Didn't know that you could get that kind of speed from a stock DA150.
Bill, I think you could close that gap up between the spinner and cowl.

Yup, those are straight line and level flight speeds. The race start speeds will more than likely hit 200mph + or - going across the start line. With the right CF race prop the stock 150 will blast right past 8500rpm's

oh yea, the bigger the spinner gap, the more drag

The all composite Miss Ashley proprietary kits are built in AZ by Team Extra. Its up to the buyer on the level of completeness from out of the mold and primered to almost ready to fly and or painted too.

'Tis true that it could be easier to source airframes, etc. for Giant Scale Air Racing! Team Extra makes the Miss Ashley, which is in numerous photos above. Tom Easterday is the guy to contact there. The USRAinfo.org website should at least have a way to contact Tom.

The Ohio guys make a nice Stiletto and Yak that are also excellent Unlimited airframes.

None are cheap; all are fun!!!

For the Limited Gas Class, Actually its all well within reach for most! Even if you don't want to compete but wanting to Go Fast&Loud

Granted, the kit will be your major expense and after that any 8+ channel radio system will do. Stock DA150's are every where and Highly suggest a Fresh one for Race Day and that's easily done by sending into DA for a health check.

Robart Air or electrical retract system, a 32oz. fuel tank, an ignition kill system, a 6" Truturn special cut spinner and a race prop or 2 and some paint.

The electric starter,,, a 12volt L/H rotation Enduro type Go Cart starter motor with a cone for 6" spinners. This might take some leg work to locate one already built. However they are available here https://www.colemanstarters.com/catalogpage1 and you will need to machine the cone to fit(5/8 hole on the cone) to the 5/8 dia. output shaft of the starter motor.

OR,,, every once in a while there's an airframe for sale or somebody selling out and all you'll need to do is install your gear and go fly

If your wanting more info shoot me a pm and we'll go from there
