A balsa plane can be built lighter , in fact foam and balsa wings with servos are lighter than a set of composite wings without. As far a strength, an airplane does not have to be any stronger than it has to be for the task it was designed for. The top 3D pilots fly wooden frames and they simply work and are not falling apart. I don't see this model in any way shape or form as revolutionary. With that said the new AT-6 is a work of art !

A balsa ply foam plane and a composite plane both have their pro's and con's. To those that have had both I'm sure you know what they are.

To each their own,,,

I have never owned a composite 3D plane.

I have 4 X 40-42% plywood/balsa,carbon laminated airframes.
I have several composite 3-3.5M composite turbine jets.

If you do not mind - what are the cons of composite 3d planes?

Here is what I see which is why I bought it:

Pro's:

It is lighter than my 3D 40% ARF's:

This 120" CARF Extra 330LX is 37-38lbs
My 122" H9 Sukhoi is 38lbs, 122" 40% Pilot Extra is 40 lbs and EF Extra 125" (118" without tips) V3 is 44lbs.

It sees to be stronger than my 3D 40% ARF's:

As far as I know - the composites are stronger. (I know from my experience that my non composites 3D 40% ARF's are quite flimsy).

Cons:
Repairs are going to be costly simply because it is a composite.

everytime I click on this video it makes my want one. the linkage and design is amazing, does the aileron/ele belcrank have some type of friction reducer to prevent wear or is it not an issue ?

Thanks. I saw 1500g on their website but was confused when they said "the whole wing panel with attached aileron is weighing merely 1500 gram, that's way below 3 lb". Not sure which one was real. 3 pounds is ~1360g.

I don't see the wing area on the web page either so if anyone has the wing panel dimensions, I'd like to see how the empty wing weight compares with the sheeted foam equivalent. Looks really good so far. My guess is that one wing panel is 1127 sq in.

If this this the case, then there's not much difference. My sheeted wings are 0.043 oz/sq in covered and hinged and at 1500g, this plane's panel would be 0.047 oz/sq in. I'll take that.

I flew mine last week:

CARF Extra 330LX 120" - 40%

This aircraft brings a new meaning to XA flying in 40% planes. Very agile for its size. Rolls just as fast as some 35% planes. Power to weight similar to some 35% planes.

Top speed 108mph, very smooth with no coupling.

Setup and weight:

GP 178
Falcon 32x11
Bluebird H51B x 8 (900oz + per servo)
Bluebird 2109 x1
Pulse 2s lipo x 2 3600mah (6 flights per set down to 40%)

Weight:
36.8lbs dry without smoke system
37.1 lbs dry with smoke system

Changes to be made next week:

Remove 18mm solid oak plank from firewall and replace with 18mm stand offs when they arrive. Weight saving of 8oz ( appz 200g)
Replace 5" spinner with 6" spinner. (Additional weight of 2oz ( appx 50g).

This was a quick build compared to traditional balsa/plywood/carbon laminated plywood airframes from the other manufacturers. Total time was about 12hrs to get this in the air. (I weighed the savings on servo extensions alone and it was about 540grams - more than 1 pound). (the longest extension used in this airframe is 16" long)

There is a M4 screw that holds the canopy. 15 flights so far and it is tight when I land.
