Re: cooling for zdz super 80

Hey Dick,
What kind of R.P.M. should I be getting from this motor being brand new and not broke in yet with mejzlik 26-10? I'm at about 800 ft. A.S.L.. I have it running at a steady 6200 RPM on the ground, and can touch the cylinder after running. Tuning this thing is such a pain because it wont start when hot. By the time I get it started after running I forget which way I was going with the needles and have to start all over. I may not have the butterfly adjusted all the way open at full throtle. I was just so happy to get the thing running at 6200 I left it there for now to rest up my shoulder from flippin the dang prop.

Re: cooling for zdz super 80

forget about the rpm -for now
first thing is staring procedure -
one -hard flipping accomplishes nothing
when cold choke till wet (open throttle closed choke ignition off usually 5-15 flips - it will feel and sound squishy when wet -
close throttle to a LOW setting open choke flip a couple of times THEN
ad ignition and flip - it should go
hot restarts
this is the one that gets everyone at first

do not choke -
flip thru at low idle with ignition on easy flips it will in a few sputter and will typically then start
if it sputters then does not start
a couple of choked flips -thats all --or you flood it.
warm restarts are typically one flip.
you have easy access to needles?
I did a post on that
if not remove owl and recheck for full throttle etc and setup engine with cowl off
any run ups should be for a few seconds only - long run ups just heat the engine and you learn nuthin.
so try this for now let me know if it helped
oh yeh always reset ignition in 30 seconds if it has not started sometimes the auto shut off is quick -- not a full minute

Cold starts are easy. I do just like the manual says and it starts every time. I forgot about the ignition auto shut off. That may have been the problem on a couple of the hot start tries . I'll give it another try in a day or two when the rain stops.

Re: cooling for zdz super 80

Well I finally got a couple of flights in tonight with the new setup. The motor was set pretty rich for break in, only turning 6000 rpm. After a 10 minet flight I could put my hand on the motor without getting burnt. We got temp. readings of only 180 deg. Dick is the man, listen to what he has to say...he know what he is talking about.

Yoyo and Dick, I got a lot of inspiration from this old thread. I realized I had a less-than-ideal setup on my Extra. The first two pictures are what I had before. The only part of the engine getting any direct air was the head. The cylinder was buried inside the cowl. There was indirect air coming in the cheeks, but that was all. The rest of the pix are the new setup. The cheeks are 75% closed. I left an opening to access choke. Now air is forced through the cylinder fins.
