Why not a free piston enigne? - some of those are used in some high powered applications (No crankshaft - the pistons reciprocate on their own)

I believe cold war era mark 3 torpedos used a version of the free piston design. JP-10 fuel with built in oxidizer.

Cold War Era. Mark 3 has been around since 1895. Originally had 3 cylinder compressed air engine.
