Who Remembers the Ultra Hots

Few weeks back a friend of mine asked if I would be interested in one. Sure I said why not, and naturaly howmuch. Free, Best price yet. He has had the kit for many years and had built wing and lower half of fuse. I have just about finished it, and ready for coveing. Trying to make a choice for the engine on it. Don't want to overpower it (not a thought that comes to this powerhungry mind). First thought was Moki 1.8- then started giving thought to a GMS 120, should be enough and have seen great results from other GMS engines.

I had one of these, its life ended when I hit a limbo-pole back in the early 90s! It flew great though!

I would put a ST 3250 in it!!!!! I've had LOTS of expierence with that engine! I've seen them fly, but have never flown one. An old friend had one, and put a gasser in it!! Unsure of which one, but had plenty of power!!!

I had the 60-size Hots. Absolutely loved that plane! I learned Knife edge, hovers, torquerolls, rolling maneuvers, and knife edge spins on that thing! I heard a rumor that someone was bringing it back. If it comes back, I'll have one - kit or ARF, doesn't matter!

Re: Who Remembers the Ultra Hots

Now there is a plane that brings back memories. I don't think there is a single rounded corner on that entire plane. I don't remember, but does the wing come off on the larger ones? I always wanted one of those so bad, but was never able to afford one. I would like to get one now just for the hell of it.

Not to rob your thread, but while we are talking about old planes, does anybody remember the Pipe Dream? I used to lay awake at night thinking of ways to afford one on a paper boys budget, or talking my Dad into buying if for me. That never happened just like the Hots. I would love to get one of those today also. It's funny, now that I can afford those planes, they are no longer available.

I have a 60 size framed up and a 40 size partially framed up. It is a fun airplane to play with that is for sure.

The wing is one long 81" piece, mounts typical with 3/8" dowels and bolt at back. The toughest part was building the removeable center section of the fuse that mounts over the wing. If it is built to be clean and snug then its almost too tight to get on and off. Fianlly reach a happy medium with that part. Now just got to make myself get out and start the final sanding.

Re: Who Remembers the Ultra Hots

I had an Ultra Hots back in the 1993 that I had built from a set of plans. I had a Quadra 50 mounted on it. It would take off in about 20 feet and go straight up! I'm getting ready to build a Super Hots from a set of plans that I have and I going to mount a Saito 91 on it. It should have similar performance.

There was a set of plans in one of the magazines a couple of years ago. I'll see if I can find it. I think it M.A.N.

I had both the Ultra Hots and a Giant Hots, a G38 and 3.2 Sachs. Good first entry for gas easy flyer. These were the "Giant Scale" in the early 90's one piece wing was the only hassle.

Re: Who Remembers the Ultra Hots

I am building an Ultra Hots. Does anyone know if a G62 is too big? What is the spec range for engines?
Thanks - Ken kf4u@embarqmail.com

Here's an interesting derivative, scratch bashed from plans by one of our club members. It's referred to as the "Double Hots." Two OS 90's for motivation. There was a carbon fiber strap joining the fuse bottoms, under and separate from the wings, for added reinforcement. Sounds very cool. Fast and fun to watch.
