where it belongs.... I wasnt gonna go nuts with painting on this prototype yak, but i wanted
to at least give it a little color so i used my old flame masks that i had, and i went to spray
with my airbrush... well lets just say i would have been better off drawing the flames with
frickin crayons rather than trusting this airbrush because it looks like CRAP!
oh well, it is just a prototype, and the airframe probly wont last that long anyway LOL
other than that, its just about finished, all of the carbon is done, 2 of 3 servos are installed
and linked up, just gotta glue to top fuse down, hinge the rudder and link the servo to it,
mount my motor, esc, and RX.
so at the gym tomorow i'll bring the airfoiled yak 55 and this new yak 55SP. and of course my
little vapor, and im bringin my buddy viral and his 4-site too.
TJ, you gonna be there tomorow?
Sorry but no flying until next wed, The gym will be closed, its a bye week for the Holiday...

I got my Airbrushes from harbor freight they were like 15 bucks each. I got the Chrome and anodized blue ones. They work ok and they are double action, hopefully for Christmas I can get one of the good paasche ones

These are the ones I have.
http://www.harborfreight.com/deluxe-...kit-95810.html

This is the paasche one from tower that lots of people recommend for beginners.
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXDD38&P=7

I also have finished my Yak-55SPT design I have it cut out and ready to paint. I've changed a few things from the original Yak-55, New mounting system (I didn't like the small tabs), Different type of landing gear (more scale 2mm rod), Full counter balances on the ailerons (getting tired of the front part breaking off) and overall different fuse (more side area), and scale spats for the wheels. After this one is complete If I like it I will do the Airfoiled version.

I'm also designing a SBach 342 for Tim, I did one last year but I want to redo it to make it better looking, more on that one later.

All this while making 4 more RTF foamys for guys at the gym, a Bi-plane and a couple yaks !! I've been very busy.

Re: DIY Hot Wire Foam cutter build!

so ive been using the crap out of my hot wire cutter, its working like a charm!
the problem ive been having is cutting the hinge line on the ailerons. the easiest way to
do it is the single bevel top-hinge style, but that seems to throw off the aileron differential.
so ive been cutting a double bevel 45 degree angle on the wings lately, but its a real pain in
the butt because i have to cut everything by hand with a razor blade and it takes FOREVER
doing it by hand.
so what ive decided to do is to build another hot wire cutter that uses the existing cutting table,
but will easily fold up out of the way for when i need to cut an airfoiled wing with the suspended
cutting bow. unfortunately i dont have any pictures yet, but as soon as i get home from work
i will take some pictures and post them on this thread.
basically there is an arm that is attached to the back of the table that points straight up, and i have
another arm that bolts to that, that reaches over the table. the cutting wire
stretches from that arm, down through the table, and is attached underneath the table.
it pretty much looks like a table top bandsaw, but with a wire instead of the blade.
ive installed a spring at the top of the wire to maintain tension on the wire, but i can simply unhook
the spring from the wire, and i put a hinge of the top arm so i can swing the whole arm assembly
up and out of the way when i need to use the other cutting bow. its kinda hard to explain, but its
not nearly as complicated as im making it sound LOL!
i plan on building a jig that will hold the aileron and wing that is set at 45 degrees that i will be able
to just slide the jig down the wire and cut a perfect hinge line. this is all in theory, but im hoping
it will work as planned... stay tuned!!

Re: DIY Hot Wire Foam cutter build!

ok finally got some pictures taken of the new cutter...
i need to put a small dimmer switch in line to the cutting wire, it keeps tripping my power
supply breaker switch. i think its because the cutting wire is so much shorter than the one
on the longer cutting bow, so if i can install a dimmer switch to turn down the power just a
bit i think i'll be golden.
anyway heres a few pictures:

Re: DIY Hot Wire Foam cutter build!

thanks dude! i havent had a chance to actually use it yet though.
i actually built the arm to where i could remove a screw and tilt the arm over at a 45 degree
angle, wich would put the cutting wire right at 45 degrees. i designed it that way
in case my jig idea doesnt work lol

with mine, I just slide the wire down the length of the boom till the wire is 45 degrees the spring keeps the tension.

did you or are you going to design a rim for the trailing edge to ride along so you get a streight line? i cant wait to see these airfoils in action!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The trailing edge is pretty much cut strait before you start the hot wire airfoil. one day I'll make a video of a how to... or Jared can do it! its pretty easy to do. I use a positive template and Jared uses a negative, the negative is easier I just haven't had the time to make one but I will pretty soon.

Re: DIY Hot Wire Foam cutter build!

yea i noticed that. i guess the negative is just alittle more harsh when you go past the template and into the airfoil. withthe positive you cant go into the airfoil. but i assume that the negative is probably easier. i just meant to get a streight bevel.

yep TJ is correct!
as far as cutting the hinge lines, i used my mad awesome microsoft PAINT skills to draw
up a quick diagram of what my thoughts are...(dont make fun, i havent used "paint" in years! lol)
