Yes this is a serious question. I’m new to gasoline engines.

Ok then it is the sensor that detects the crankshafts position in order to fire the spark plugs
It does so when the magnet in the hub passes by it
It is commonly referred to as the crankshaft sensor

Do you have that engine? If so, once you read the user manual for it, it will tell you what it does.

It can be, as long as the ignition unit has a provision for an onboard tach.

It connects to the ignition that came in the same box. The ignition has a wire for RPM sensor but none come with the engine.

Thought that was what was at the heart of the DeLorean that Doc Brown used in Back to the Future!

Not sure which GP motor you have but here are the manuals for the

GP123: https://www.baorcshop24.com/media/pd...123-Manual.pdf
and the
GP176: https://www.baorcshop24.com/media/pd...176-Manual.pdf

Here's a 'generic' GP manual from July 2019 that includes information on the GP76, which I believe is the one you have

You should have a manual that came with the engine. If not, please download a copy of it. Attached is an image that shows the wire connects to the wire labeled “sensor “. Please, find someone that is very familiar with gas engines to help you. Also, do a search here on this website for “gas engines for newbies”
