zdz 80rv question
Ok, I've mounted a zdz 80 in my 33% extra. The carb is rear mounted, so the carb is actually in the motor box. Is it ok to put the throttle servo in the motor box , or is it not a good idea to have a servo in the motoe box with the carb? If anyone has pics of their zdz 80rv set up please post pics....thanks

Re: zdz 80rv question
Rob,, good question! I can tell you there are two VERY different schools of thought you will get for an answer. Those of us who have been modeling since Fred Flintstone was being bottle nourished, will cringe at even thinking of having a portion of the flight system anywhere NEAR the oompah installation. Our opinion is based from years back when the RF noise of an ignition would not allow you to mount a servo near the motor, ignition, battery or even battery lead to the ignition. Now things have changed. I've seen hundreds of throttle servos mounted on the firewall with no problems at all. I tend to revert back and keep everything associated with the flight system as far back as I can. But understand this is from years of doing so. Old habits are just hard to break! The real test is range testing with ignition off, ignition on (motor off) and motor running. If there is no real difference, go for it! I'm sure my answer is ambiguous, but just setting the ground work as to why you will get two very different opinions on your question. Being as a bunch of guys are doing it with success I don't think it will be an issue. Great question, feeble answer!

Re: zdz 80rv question
Assuming that no gasoline gets into the servo case, it is probably alright. I don't know if servos are water resistant or not. For me another issue to consider would be to make the servo accessible without removing the hatch. If you think you might want to be able to get at the servo then I would put it back under the hatch somwhere.
I have been mounting servos back under the hatch, just behind the motor box, and using carbon fiber rods - gives me a good stiff and positive throttle control rod - and I have had no intereference issues yet- of course, you'd still want to do the standard range checks. There is a good how to on horizonhobby.com about how to range check PCM radios. Have fun with your engine. Dave Michael Team ZDZ www.rcshowcase.com |

Re: zdz 80rv question
I know someone who has the exact same set up and placed the throttle servo on the inside left rear corner and the choke on the left outside of the firewall and the ignition on the outside right firewall.Had zero problems worked like a charm
I believe Viper69 (my bro) can send you pictures of the set-up.I will get him to chime in. |

Re: zdz 80rv question
I guess the thing I was most worried about is gas coming out of the carb and getting on the servo. It doesnt sound like this happens. Thanks for all the feedback guys, and thanks for the photos. Any more photos would be great throttlestick. Thanks again.
