2007 Tangerine Pattern Event

The Tangerine’s, as they used to be known, was my 2nd most looked forward to contest of the year when I was a kid, Nats being 1st. It always meant that we would get to go down to Florida, getting out of the cold winters in New Jersey, and visit Disney World and fly airplanes, just not in that order. The Tangerine’s was a multi-part contest, much like how the Nats is. There was pylon, pattern, a night-fly and an airshow over the course of three long weekends. We weren’t into pylon when we first started going to it, but we, my brother and I, were into pattern and enjoyed the airshow when we were around for them. Pilots like Ivan Kristensen, Chip Hyde, Don Lowe, Dave vonLinsowe and other big names used to make the journey down every year to participate in the pattern portion of Tangerine’s, which made the contest one of the hottest to attend.
The pattern portion of Tangerine’s is making a comeback of sorts. There has been some talk about trying to get Tangerine’s status back from the 80’s/90’s as being one of the premiere events across the country. At the end of the month the airshow will take place, but for this weekend, it’s the pattern contest. Steve Homenda is putting on the pattern portion again this weekend at RCACF (www.rcacf.com) and it is shaping up to be another well run and attended events. F3A will be flying the new sequences for the next 2 years, P-09 and F-09, while the AMA classes will be flying their current 2007 schedules (http://www.modelaircraft.org/events/rulebooks/RC%20Aerobatics.pdf). Last year there were 37 pilots that entered the contest and we are looking forward to having about the same this year. The locals here are already practicing, my brother and I included. No sense in letting these high 70’s and clear blue sky’s go to waste. I will report back as the week progresses and through out the contest with pictures and results. Stay tuned…

Since NASA called of the shuttle launch, I guess the decision is easy now... time to go practice. Sunny, light winds and high 70's today should make it a nice day of flying. Pics to come...

OH NO... not the SECRET WEAPON...

A beautiful day for flying, and only 3 of us took advantage. There were 5 others, but none practicing for the contest. Jerry Gallagher was out there with his Astral shaking off the cobwebs. My brother David was out there to get in some F sequence practice with my Integral. Blake was out there, but he didn't have his Secret Weapon out with him (tomorrow he'll unvail it). Don Lowe and Dave Stodart were out there flying their fun planes. The whole weekend looks to be just as nice as today. Low 80's with a light wind... ahhhhh. Tomorrow at 4pm is the new time for the shuttle launch.
