Exceed Monster motors.

Has anyone used the Exceed 160 size Brushless? Wondering how many watts It can draw on a 20" 2 blade prop, 18, 19 or 20" 3 blades prop? How did you find the quality?

I got the Nitroplanes 69" Yak 54 that turns magically into a 72" when it arrives. It has short landing gear, and that needs to be moved forward about 3' or so! it's under the CG right now... So I want to know if I can prop it to get up to 2700w, like it is rated for, out of a 20" prop.

Re: Exceed Monster motors.

Well it's just a copy of the Turnigy 63/64 or the EFlite 160, so just for S&G's I used MotoCalc to run the specs.
To get approx 2700 watts, with a 20 x10 prop you would need to run 10 cells, but it also would be pulling around 80 amps.

Best way to give you an idea of what's going to happen with a set up is to use a calc program, before you try it.
And then verify what you decide to use with something like an Astro or Watt meter to be sure.

I have a pair of the Turnigy versions, one spins a 20x8 to power my AGRI DUCK, on 6 cells, set pulls about 40 amps, produces about 12 pounds of thrust, and propells the beast to about 35 mph. Then again it's got a 9 1/2 foot wingspan, and weighs around 10 pounds, and has more drag then a barn door.

The other one is in my Gee Bee R3, 60" span, bout 9 pounds. Spins a 15x12 on 9 cells, pulls around 46 amps, roughly 1500 watts. 10 pounds of thrust, and will hit 90 mph straight and level. Started out with 6 cells, spinning a 14x13x3 but didn't have enough speed.

Re: Exceed Monster motors.

I have an Exceed 160 on a Sig Rascal. Its running on a 10 cell 5000 mah lipo with a 20x10 prop. I haven't putt a watt meter on it recently but I believe it was pulling 1950 watts. The prop is a Master Airscrew so a better brand prop will be more efficient. Make sure your first flights are with the ESC on low timing. Don't try it with the ESC on high timing. Your motor and esc will get out of synch, over heat and you could fry the motor or ESC. Ask me how I know.

Randy.

Sounds like that 160 isn't even breaking a sweat at <2000W?
I've driven the Turnigy SK 42-60 to 1460 on 6S and that is so much smaller. I had the Turnigy 50-55 up over 2000W and that is smaller too.

Any idea how much thrust you get at 2000W?

Re: Exceed Monster motors.

Enough to pull the Rascal in the biggest loop I want at a little over half throttle. I know that doesn't answer your queation but i haven't measured the thrust. To get more thrust than I am getting and increase the watts you would need to run a larger prop. Run a 20 x 12 or even a 22 x 12 with a watt meter on it and see how many watts it pulls. It comes with the bullet connectors already on the motor, an X mount and a prop adaptor that bolts to the front of the motor not the one that slides on the shaft.

To get back to your first post, I have 20-25 flights on the motor and have had no trouble with it. I try not to push my equipment to the limit in an effort to get longer life out ot it. For $49.00 I think its a good deal but it is a $49.00 dollar motor and I don't know how long it would last if you push it to the limit for most of the time on every flight.

Hope this helps.

Randy.

The spare motor I had disappeared from my house and I can't find it. Any idea where to look? I think I'm missing a couple of batteries and an ESC also.

I saw the round, buzzy part, now I'm looking for the parts that contain the smoke.
Trying this set up on the new Red Aero RC 72" MXS. More pics later.

Looks awesome. I'm trying out the Turnigy 42-60 on my Extra 330S(nitroplanes) . I had to build a long motor mount. The light ply nitro mount snapped off during a poor landing last summer. Virtually no other damage. That means a 6 1/8 long mount though else I would have done the nylon spacer trick on this as well. The ply nitro mount was 7.9 ounces and the mount I made today is 4.9 and can go lighter( not inlcuding some of the mounting bolts). I can still shave off another 1/2 ounce or so.

Any more longevity reports on the 160's? I am thinking of grabbing up a couple. Hey Randy, where do you get these for 49 bucks??

Mike,

Hobbypartz.com

When they are in stock. And I see they are in stock at the time of this post.

The motor in post #9 is mine. With a 20-10 prop it pulled 2200 watts. The plane was way overpowered. I know some people say there is no such thing as overpowered but it would pull the plane out of a torque roll with real authority. I only have 5000 MAH 5 cell batteries so the plane weighed a pound more than with a DLE 30 on it. If I had smaller batteries I could have shaved that pound off and made it fly better. But since it was just a test bed I didn't spend the money for more batteries. Again I'm pretty happy with the motor. I had a Suppo HV ESC on the motor that failed after about thirty seconds of running. Replaced it with a Turnigy HV ESC and it has worked just fine.

So Randy, with the Turnigy HV ESC, you have the timing on low correct?
