Man that is a nice plane! I agree, keeping a build thread going is work, I have done a few now and will probably take a break on my next build and just post an abbreviated build thread when done.

why fewer build threads?

I am a full-time builder and it is several things;

The customers rule on threads and some love them.

If I use threads here, then there are the idiots to deal with. That alone has made me go to other places for the thread.

I am not sure if the high end builds are of interest to the readers and there are a lot of questions that are not really productive.

High-end customers are private.

People have lost the ability to put words together.

I just finished an 11 month build on a near Giant scale Extra 300S (64Ē wingspan). While itís not perfect, itís my largest build yet and I have an extensive build thread over at RCG. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...version/page19

It is a lot of work making a build thread though, but I do it in hopes of helping and inspiring others in the hobby, and also helps me when I need to remember what I did so I can duplicate on other builds.

Amen. Very true. Also true on the non-productive posts.

Here’s a Laser I’m building. A Japanese kit from the 80s for the TOC.

I’ve had to do a LOT of modifications. Putting a DA50 in it.

Not a build for the faint of heart. Had to learn Japanese just to read the 3 pages of instructions and plans!

I have a 77” Ultimate kit to build after this.

I love Laserís, here is a picture of my old 1/3 scale Lanier Laser 200, with a DA 50 and an all up weight of 15lbs. 8 ozs. It was a great flyer back in the day.

I’m considering building, what do you think about a balsa USA kit like the stingray for a first time builder? I want something aerobatic but don’t know how difficult it would be. ARF’s have gotten so complete now there’s hardly anything challenging left to do. I enjoy tinkering in the shop as much as flying. Any recommendations for a relatively easy first project?

For a first time builder, the Stingray looks to be a good choice. I recommend that you visit the other two forums for build logs on this kit. I just looked at one build in RCU, and it looks like something a first time (big plane) builder could handle as well as modify a bit. Like change out the gear, the canopy, the cowling, how about an open canopy?

For the first build, I would stay away from BUSA kits. There instructions are not detailed and you will find your self thinking more than gluing. Stick with top flights or Midwest or a sig for a first timer
.My 2 cents.

Here's a thought about ARF's. You can't beat the speed and accuracy and cost involved in building ARF's. Some years ago, there was a company building Ready-To-Cover planes. These were manufactured to the stage where the customer would apply the covering material. That's nearly a lost art in itself. Maybe someday, RTC will return.

As for today's ARFs, I wish they would offer them covered in one color sans graphics. Like how about all white or yellow? Let me decide what graphics to buy and apply. The sales demand for companies making graphics might increase.

Another wish of mine is that ARF's would be sold in bare bones versions. Covering is time consuming, but labor can be love. Plus, I would have a plane that others would stare at positively or negatively.

Could anyone foresee sales on covering, covering irons, trim tools, graphics, striping tape, more CA to strengthen the hot glue joints, wood peckers, and other related accessories soaring to all time highs? I bet that all these things sit on shelves longer than sellers wish.

Oh well, some day, that will come about.
