Help!
1/4 Piper Cub kit engine size suggestions

I am building the 104" wingspan Piper Cub. Going gas engine. What size gas engine for this plane? Like it to be a little over-powered.

thanks for the help.

I have a Bill Hempel 1/4 scale L4 with 105" wingspan. I used the DLE 55RA for the powerplant. Another club member went with the DTL 35RA for the same plane and it flies more scale where as I have way more power. Either will fly it but the 55 would give you the edge on power.

Something 4 stroke and multi cylinder. Hold a gun to my head and make me install a 2 cycle single cylinder in a scale plane and I'll fly the plane straight into a tree. Nothing worse than a well built scale war bird with an ugly single cylinder hanging out under the cowling.

helps to include things like projected finished weight and altitude at which you fly. A friend has a 96 in Decathlon with a DLE 55RA and it's pretty spirited. At that size a 35 is a bit small.

I have the H9 X Cub which is 116 in, and it has a DA 70. It's not an installation that would warm the heart of a scale enthusiast.

What kit? A light build will fly great with a 35. A heavy build will fly ok with a 50. A light build with a 50 can/will become kindling if you don’t reinforce it in the right areas. Most small gas four strokes are best suited as paper weights.

Really! 50cc engines on 1/4 scale Cubs.....
The 3 1/4 scale Cubs I had all flew great on DLE-20's and had plenty of power. Flew most of the flight, including take-off, at half throttle and would loop from level flight. Had a good friend with a 1/4 scale Cub on floats that he flew for years on an old, worn out G-23 and it flew well.
Does a 20" prop on a 50 cc engine even clear the ground on a 1/4 scale Cub?????

99 out of 100 warbirds have 2 strokes and the cylinder heads comming out of the bottom! I dont think anyone is gonna hold a gun to your head.. what would you put in a TF Mustang, or a Spitfire?

Eflite Power 160 on 10s. You will not be disappointed!! Been flying a 1/4 scale Dave Patrick arf on floats for a few years. The engine never quits and when you pull the throttle all the way back it actually descends.

No way!! The price of batts and a good charger would break the bank..

All that hard work to get to authentic scale reproduction at the field/ in the air and it is ruined with a 2 stoke.

I have to laugh at the constant gas 4 stroke comments you guys make.. How many do you own? I have had several and in general POS comes to mind. 3x the cost , 2x the weight, 1/2 the power, plus tons of maintenance compared to a two stroke.. The only one i have kept is my 250 moki asI have a 1/3 scale stearman for it.. If I want to listen to sweet sounds I will stay home and play my stereo.. for reliable flying fun get a good two stroke gasser.

My current build is a 1/3 scale Cub and will be powered with a gas burning Kavan 50cc 4 stroke.

You are saying that Kolms and Valachs are POS's or you bought other brand POS's?

I have to laugh at people who don't appreciate the final step to scale building. This is a POS? Underpowered?

The Galloping Ghost - Perfect Set Up - Kolm Engine 4 cylinder (3 min 17 sec)

A single cylinder 2 stroke with a cheap muffler is a horrible thing to do to a Mustang/Spitfire/109, etc, etc.

As yours, just my opinion btw.
