I've been running a 3W 140 on a version 1 RCEXL with no problems but recently it started losing spark intermittently on one lead so I bought a replacement this time version 2 it produces spark on both plugs NGK CM6s but will not run the engine at all. At first thought it was a faulty unit but runs a mate's motor no problem and have also tried another version 2 on my engine and no go. Have tried different Hall sensors as well but as soon as I put "version 1" back on the engine it fires straight up, any ideas please

How many volts in?

Most of the time, when getting intermittent spark the problem is the insulation breaking down in the plug cap. You might be able to fix your V-1 ignition with a simple cap replacement.

Have tried 4.8 nihms and 2S lipo usually run 4.8

Look on the front of the ignition box and see what voltage it is rated for.


The newer ones are rated for 6-12 volts and you need use at least a two cell lipo or life battery

Latest ones in the UK are labelled 4.8 -8.4V The 6-12V ones are not around here any more, I have tried a fully charged 2S lipo however and no joy. The version1 unit is labelled 4.8-6.0 V and works fine apart from dropping one cylinder so I've not used a lipo on that

Buy a RCexl ignition tester. you can drive the ignition without the prop turning. I would wiggle wires while testing and see if there is an intermittent connection.
