NEW From Desert Aircraft - The DA120 EFI!

It's a sexy new motor from the folks at Desert Aircraft! It is super smooth, with great transition and low idle. Colton Clark gives us the info. Check it out!

This motor is the big buzz at the WRAM show!

I just got off the phone with brother Colton Clark from Desert Aircraft at the WRAM show! He said they were getting tons of questions on this new release! Here is what he had to say:

Colton Clark - Desert Aircraft

One think I can say about the new DA120 EFI is that it's amazing! It's very smooth, and never burbles,. You have an ECU and fuel pump. It is a super intelligent system that idles lower than carburetor.

The air cleaner optional but recommend, and it fits in most cowlings.

Retrofit?

In the future we may offer a retrofit for the fuel injection but you motor will have to be shipped to DA for an inspection and hub change (and other parts). More on that in the future.

This is a killer engine!

Colton Clark DA120 EFI (3 min 37 sec)

Specs

  • Electronic fuel injection
  • Incredible transition and throttle response
  • No needle adjustments
  • Automatically compensates from 0 to 10,000 feet
  • Available April 2016
  • $3,899

I was wondering how much the upgrade would cost. Then I saw the price tag: $3,899. I'm a big DA fan, but I won't be buying one of these anytime soon.

You can go back a few years in threads and find people saying it couldn't be done reliably etc. The early adopters may have to pay a pretty penny but within a few years I predict the price will come down, reliability will go up and only a few people will be holding onto their chain saw carbs.

When 2.4 came out, there were many naysayers. Not many of those left.

Nice job pushing technology forward DA!

I think I had the first color laptop at the company I was working in 1997 (Lockheed) and IIRC it was $5200. Heck even "primitive" NASCAR and H-D have EFI these days.

Is there any information available about the weight and power difference between FI and carb versions?

I've got a really good video of this. Going to try to post it this evening. If I can't get it off of Dave's pad I'll get it uploaded when we get back to Tucson

Thanks for the info Colton. I'm a really big DA fan, but unfortunately will have to wait for prices to drop some before jumping in here. Although I'm thinking that thing, air cleaner and all would fit very sweetly in my new 110 Yak cowling.

Yeah the price is the only thing that's a little scary, but peace of mind as far as never having to tune or tweak the engine based on where you're flying is always a nice feature. I'd be curious to see what kind of EFI system this is and what it all uses to determine the fuel/air mixture...

LOTS of guys will buy it. Could you have ever imagined:

- more than $150 for a single servo?
- over $2,000 for a very popular transmitter?
- over $3,000 for a very popular 4 cylinder gas engine?

The cost of an EFI engine will be common place 3 years from now and we won't even blink.

Didn't O.S. offer EFI on some pattern, glow 2-stroke motors back in the day? What ever became of those?
