To answer the question, DOD was being operated mostly for fun by giant scale aerobatic enthusiasts who had other business interests. When the economy turned down it was necessary for the owners to concentrate on their bread and butter business and the time required to care for DOD just wasn't there.

Joe Hunt is sort of back at it. Some of his old build threads and vids can be found at his new site. Super slow over there maybe if the sunshines just right good Ol JH will get back in the game full time and produce some more of those great build threads and instructional vids he was known for.

Re: What happened downonthedeck.com

I was a forum moderator on DOD. Kevin and Matt bought the site from its creator, Joe Hunt, and were putting their own money into it to keep it going. Granted, at the time at least, manufacturers were sending things to them to review. Kevin liked to fly and Matt liked to take pictures so it worked out great. The economy started going down hill and products to review went dry. Kevin and Matt no longer wanted to put their own money into it to buy things to review and to keep the servers going. Furthermore, their trucking business was requiring more time to keep it afloat during hard economic times. They listed the site for sale and had a few guys interested but ultimately didn't put up the $$$ for the asking price. DOD is still technically for sale and all the software is still loaded on servers. The only thing is to find a price someone is willing to pay and they are willing to accept.

I would've bought it, but I'm in grad school and don't have that kind of money or time. It was a good site and I posted both here and DOD even though I was a forum moderator. Me and another guy even did a simultaneous build of the FG Foamy on there.

I have a lot of the videos Mr. Hunt produced and I uploaded the Hitec programming ones into the EF 88" Extra 300 thread.

I've been looking all over for Joe Hunt's Girl/plane pics! Anyone have any high-res for me to put as my new desktop background?
