Im thinking about starting to compete in some imac pretty soon, once I get a plane built. Im thinking about a 2.6m comp arf with a da 100 but I cant make my mind up on whether or not to set it up with the stock mufflers or a set of mtw cans. Noise isnt a problem at my feild but it seems that more and more feilds are setting restrictions on gas noise.

Okay -Gas Noise at our field is really no problem - just don't funk up the pits!!

Are cans suppose to be louder than the typical expansion chamber type mufflers?

Personally, I'm a member of a club that has lost 2 fields to development encroachment, and noise is the thing that sent us packin'.

I run a DA100 and have it on cans. I can honestly say that when I'm in the air at the same time as a .46 size trainer, you can't hear my airplane.

You're going to get dozens of opinions both ways, take 'em all with a grain of salt and make up your own mind.

They help to quite the plane down, smooth out the mid range of the motor, and add a little power, but they add weight and are about $400 for the set up im looking for.

CANS!!! I wish I had cans! Every time I go to fly all the old dudes "safety officers" complain about the noise.

Thats the way i have been leaning Matchless. I just was hesitant because of the cost but from the most I have seen it seems that they are worth it.

100% worth it. If I had a second chance I would have cans in my plane. Its nice to not worry about how loud your plane is.

Can's all the way for me from now on. Not just to comply with noise regs, but I hate the way gassers sound with stock mufflers on them anymore.

My cannister setup on my DA made it have a much quicker throttle response. No lag at all. The noise is WAY down, but regardless the idle is much lower and the throttle responds much quicker. It sure wasn't bad to begin with. Cans from now on for me.

You say that noise is not an issue at your club, but then you say that you want to fly IMAC. Well it doesn't matter if noise is a concern, or not at your club. You will be flying at clubs where noise is a concern. You answered you own question. Run cans.

I asked because I didnt know if there where noise issues at the clubs in the NE that hold imac competitions, but even if they dont im still pretty sure that im going w cans.

OK, I'm going off the reservation. I used to run cans and am now back to all stock mufflers on all my 40%Er's. At my field noise is not a problem but I do run into it at fields when I go to IMAC events. With a little throttle control you can keep the noise down to an acceptable level. The down side for me is it does take a little longer to install them, and cost is a factor. I'm sure I will have to go back to cans, but not until I have to.

To answer your question about the NE region and noise, I believe only one contest next year will require cans on anything 100cc+ and thats for out neighbors sake, and my sanity... just dont want to hear those mufflers all day long. As for the cost to install cans... whats a set of mufflers run... 125-150 bucks depending on the manf.... cans run 300-400 dollars with headers depending on whether you go with something like JMB cans, or more expensive like MTW or Pefa... cost diff, 150 to 250 bucks... when you have 4K invested in an airplane, whats another 150 bucks. As for the install, easy as pie. Most wood airframes have can tunnels designed into them, and the composite arf all you have to do is cut two holes in the front, and bolt two can mounts from DA or RCShowcase to the landing gear bulkhead. Youll have more work building your fuel tank support and rudder tray mounts than installing the cans. Advantages far out weigh any "cost" associated with installing cans. Just my .02.
