1/4 cub engine size

Okay so I have the balsa USA 1/4 cub and I’m trying to figure between a 26cc gasoline 2 stroke or a 32cc gasoline 2 stroke engine. I have built many cubs in the past as mildly aerobatic planes and now I’m onto the biggest cub I’ve built as a sport/scale plane. I’ve already added carbon spar and aluminum wing struts as well as gave wings 0 degrees of dihedral. I’ve seen mixed reviews with two sizes and can’t tell if 26 has evough umph and if 32 is too much. Any input would be appreciated!

Not sure of the finished weight but I'll give you a comparison.

I have the H-9 1/4 scale Super Cub. It came with a Zenoah G26 and flew OK, not thrilling but ok, and it flew with floats with that setup.

Then Valley View sent me a 40cc twin and it went for "eh" to "WOW".

A 33 or 35 would probably be ideal so I would say for sure, unless it weighs half as much as my SC a 32 wouldn't be too much and even so, you have a throttle stick (though many guys use it like a toggle switch).

I have a 1/4 scale Sig Clipped Wing Cub with a Saito FG 30 4 stroke gas engine. The power is a perfect match with enough reserve to handle floats if I decide to add them. The sound is much more Cub like compared to any 2 stroke.
Just my 2 cents worth.

We've built multiple 1/4 Cubs with dle 35ras. Power is nice and it swings a big scale prop. Problem is we had to move the firewall back Abit. Both your engines will fly it. Pick the one that fits the best unless you want to buy a new engine

I second the DLE35RA. I had a 1/4 Cub and the 35 really made it fun even on the floats.

I've got a dle30 in a 1/4 h9 super cub and it has plenty of power. Could probably do with a bit smaller but it balances perfectly with the 30.

Couple years ago I did a Bill Hemple 1/4 Clipped Wing and ran a DA-50 in it. Needless to say it would do anything...

Cubs will work with lots of different power options. It comes down to personal preference. I have seen and flown 1/4 scale cubs on engines as small as a 2-stroke .60 (10cc) glow. At the other end, Bill Hempel fly the prototype Hempel 25% clipped wing Cub with a 3W-60 gas (3.6 cu in). That's an insane range of engines.

So if you want cub like performance and want to stay light I'd go with a 26. More aerobatic performance would require a bigger engine. Of the two you listed, I'd probably go with the 32cc.

Thank you! That’s exactly what I was looking for! I am 50/50 freestyle and scale competition so I like setting up for both! I had a 1/6 cub that I could be at a scale event one day then be doing K.E. And flat spins and furies etc. with a close fellow pilot and his edge the next day lol. Most of my planes are set up that way but I am just now getting into 5th scale and higher planes (this is my second plane over 72 inch) that I actually own.

Knowing me, I'd go DLE55RA since I have one sitting around.

I think you will be surprised on how little power you will need to fly that bird. Its a floater, not very aerobatic but it Ive seen countless 1/4 cubs flow VERY well on a OS 120. The sound is awesome. Want more "umph"? Bolt on a YS 120

dle35 is hard to beat.. a 40 twin will pull the heck out of it.... i just bought a 30cc twin from valley view and it probably would be great as it turns up a 19x8 pretty good.. The wing is not the weak spot on the busa cub. The horizontal stab flutters and fails and or the top of the cabin splits apart if you do outside maneuvers or drag a wingtip..
