Re: World Model 1/5 Scale J3 Cub?
Hi guys, I've just picked up a 1/5 clipped wing model on good old e-bay. Its in great conditiolooking forward to flying it.
I've got BIG wheels and a 20 year old Super Tiger 61 to go in it. looks like a bit of glassfiber around the main bulkhead won't go amis, has anyone 'lost' a firewall yet?? I've had a model with the clamped together push rods before, so yet again I plan to braze these to a brass plate and polish them well, as this frees them up very well. Is the cabin of these models strong enough to take a tow hook, as is, or should I reinforce the cabin roof and sides to take the loads? Thanks in advance, I do hope someone looks at these old threads, not just me.....Robin |

Re: World Model 1/5 Scale J3 Cub?
It's really hard to believe that I started this thread a year and a half ago. Which means that's how long my Cub sat around unfinished. Life does tend to get in the way, but I never imagined what part that it has played.
Yesterday I got busy and finished things up on the Cub and the plan is to maiden it on Saturday. At least that's the plan. I hope that all that have replied on this thread are still enjoying their Cubs. Cheers! BH |

Re: World Model 1/5 Scale J3 Cub?
Just a little follow-up for those who are still following this thread.
I maidened my Cub on Saturday. It was WAY too windy, but I put three flights on her. Well flights isn't the best word for it, more like survived three trips to the sky. The wind was 15 to 20 and gusty. Sunday was a much better day for flying and, despite water standing in places on the runway from the previous night and early morning rains, I put nearly two hours of flight time on my Cub. I'm very pleased with the way she flys and handles. Even though it's not very exciting for the spectators, there's just something about a Cub that makes them addictive to fly. Well, for me at least. Here's a link from a trip to the field on Tuesday. Nothing real fancy. Just a Cub doing what Cubs do.
Cheers! BH |

Re: World Model 1/5 Scale J3 Cub?
I am waiting for my World Models 1/5 scale clipped Cub to arrive. Planning on putting RCGF 15cc gasser in it if it will fit. Have flown Goldberg Cubs with electric AXI motor power and with O.S. 70 FS. This will be a fun project. Thanks for all the tips in this thread.
Based on all the available data on this new engine, it should fit, and should be a hoot to fly. |

Re: World Model 1/5 Scale J3 Cub?
Just out of curiosity how is the WM build quality now? I had one of their 60cc Extra's some yrs back and it was the pits regarding wood selection, dry glue joints, covering the came unstuck and poor quality fastenings.

Re: World Model 1/5 Scale J3 Cub?
The build quality and wood in mine appeared to be OK from what I could tell. I personally didn't care for the covering. It was a pain to work with and was not on par with Ultracote or Monocote. It was a terriffic flying plane, and I had no fault with any of it's characteristics.
I would hesitate to buy another WM plane based on my experience with their covering. Cheers! BH |

Re: World Model 1/5 Scale J3 Cub?
I bought this plane a few years a go. the things i would recommend doing is.
Reinforcing the area where the landing gear is bolted on the fuselage. i had a problem with this. i ran about 5 gallons of gas through the plane in two years. and after shooting touch and goes with it the fuse got beat up, after landing it at the beach i was flying at it busted and the landing gear broke through. either that i would get the landing gear that Robart make and you will be fine. the other is making sure the canopy door is mounted good. mine kept falling off after i reinforced it everything was good. i used a Saito 100 in it with a 14x6 prop and it was plenty of power. other than that i loved the plane. flies nice and is super light. i would recommend the clipped wing. |

Re: World Model 1/5 Scale J3 Cub?
I have the 1/4 scale clipped, I think they're all the same construction - It's adequate but not to same standard as H9 or even close to Pilot-RC arfs. The hardware is mediocre, I'm replacing the motor mount stuff with sae/socket head screws and will replace other hardware as needed. Still it's workable, covering was good, wood looks average, glue joints look OK. This is no BVM model tho
I modded the wing attachment with 1/4-20 studs through the fuse and made the wing strut/fuse attachment removable with some Dubro hardware and rc car body clips. Still have to unscrew the struts from the wing, but just 4 screws each, not too bad. Using an Evolution 35GT which I anticipate will cause it to be nose heavy so I may also mod the tail to install the elev/rudd servos there, that's TBD. Also plan to put the H9 1/4 scale float set on it for some float huckin..... |

Re: World Model 1/5 Scale J3 Cub?
I'm considering the 1/5 WM clipped wing cub in electric. Turnigy offers a 42-50 650KV 1100 watt motor that may work well on 5S battery for approx. 130 watts per pound.
Can anyone offer advice on watts per pound for this bird or there experiences in electric conversion ? I would be interested in performing cool aerobatics similiar to what Bill Hempel accomplishes in his 50 and 60% clipped wing cubs. Thanks LK |

What was the wingspan of this cub? I'm about to build the 90" carbon cub 15cc and I want to power it with my magnum 91 four stroke. Hoping it will be enough to power the 1/5 scale 90" cub

I have the 1/3 scale WM clipped wing cub, highly modified with parachute drop and tennis ball drop running a DLE 120. Flys extremely good at 41lbs. I’m building a 1/5 scale now. I have an RCGF 20RE and it fits perfect. It should have an AUW of about 10lbs.

Are those the stock gear or did you use/make something new?
