Kit builders?

Hi all.
Sort of new to the hobby (4-5 years). Trying to find a 1/3 scale Stearman or similar to mount a motor on. Watching forums, very few have come up. A gentleman has offered a busa kit in Michigan for sale. It is a fair deal. We have both had contact with local builders who are all "to busy" to take a project.
I am a lifelong carpenter. The idea of building a plane like this is not that challenging but daunting in time investment.
Nearing a slowdown to death ( retirement) lol.
Am I seeing an opportunity to do something interesting and rewarding here while my health runs out?
Just wondering about how much of this work may be out there, and where potential clients to build for may be found.

Yes Welton. Sort of both. Really more of a question for the hobby in general. Seems weird to not have scores of folks who build for hire in a hobby like this.
Seems like with all this information available on these forums, builders for hire are not well represented.
Just seems odd.
Seems like from a retirement occupation standpoint at least, this would be a rewarding, interesting, way to spend the time God grants, and we use.

Sorry for the delayed response. I am new to this method of communication.

For the time involved most guy's won't want to spend what it would take to build a model.
Look what a quality kit cost like a EMHW,the builder should get at lease the price of the kit to build maybe more.

Advise caution in selecting someone to build for you. There are a few very good professional
builders out there that have good to outstanding building capability.
There are many that fancy themselves as builders but may not be qualified or dependable.
There are many stories about projects that get started but don't finish.
If you want to build yourself, look at the many build threads here on FG's. That will give you an
idea of what's involved and you can make up your mind from there.

The nice thing about building one yourself is that you know every step of what was done. I built a 30cc profile plane this past winter and it was really a fun project, plus I could do things to it that may not exist in the build manual which is exactly what I did. I may build some more after retirement which ain't too far away.

You gotta get solid references for a builder. With some of the "pro" builders, you never know "what" is beneath the covering job

Back in the 70's I did a lot of building for other people. I also built display models for Hobby Shack when they started expanding their store. Basically I would build one for about the cost of the kit but I was buildling simple kits like Quickee 500. I built several sailplanes for a hard core competition guy and charged more for those. I also built a few scale airplanes for one customer and again charged more. For Hobby Shack I would get credit in the amount of the kit. I loved building and it went a long way to pay for my hobby. Fast forward 40 years later and I build full scale airplanes for a living. Have a reputation of building hot rod Supercubs and finishing the fourth one and have two more to go. I charge time and materials and make a nice living doing what I love to do. Too bad there are very few modellers out there willing to pay a decent wage to build airplanes.
