Build Log
Top Flite P51 gold edition Kit, racer

I am going to attempt to build a Top Flite P51, like a racer, sort of, with Flite Metal, and a DA 85 with a 20 x 18 prop. Should be interesting. If i can keep the weight under 25 pounds, should be good. it will have pneumatic retracts, Fiji tank for fuel, smartfly EQ 10, JR 12 channel receiver, 6 volts on the system. twp batteries for the radio, one battery for ignition with a spark switch.

i estimate it will take me 6 months to 1 year to build her, i will take my time doing it.

here are some pictures:

holy crap, is that a box of wood? I really want to start building kits, but in the last year, I have only built one wing on my 33% balsa usa super cub. Did you build a shop to build this kit in

Oh I cant wait to see this. Are you going to use the stock plastic cowl or use it to pull a mold and make one out of fiberglass.

i have cleared my work bench in my garage, and i put my car outside (LOL)
my wife is still parking her car in the garage, but i have just enough room to build.

i have started on the stabilizer.

I think someone got lazy assembling your arf. They forgot to glue and cover it. Good luck on the build! I will be watching

i am going to make the top part of the cowl out of balsa and sheeting. the bottom half will be the plastic with fiberglass and resin on inside.

i would like to interject at this time, that i just ordered solid carbon fiber rods, 3 mm for the stabs and 4 mm for the wings.
the stabs are 48" long, and for the wings, they will be 98" long.

i will reinforce the stab and wings with the carbon fiber rods, so for now, the build will pause til they arrive. once they arrive, i will sheet the stabs.

I have the same kit sitting in my to-do pile. I'm currently building a 1/4 Nieuport 28, then I'm building a 1/3 Spacewalker, then the Top Flite Giant P-51.

I'll be watching this one for sure.

Rickster, that is one awesome speedster, the red baron. i had seen your thread within past 4 weeks, and subliminally, you were my inspiration for me to get up and off my A$%@ and start the build. Now, is your airplane a kit or an ARF that you are modifying?

Oh Wow, Rickster, i just saw your thread again, and i have the answer!! Just amazing, what an incredible job. can't wait to see the finished product, and please tell us more about the reversed props, have you ever had an airplane before with this set up?
what is the advantage of the reversed prop spinning? i remember years ago, (i used to live in Miami), and at all times, the sky was filled with airliners taking off and landing, so big news was when they were coming out with a GE jet engine with reversed fan blades??? don't know if that ever came about, but they were hoping to make it more quiet.
