Futaba 12Z vs 12-FG

Hello,

Right now I have a Futaba 9CAP. I only fly aerobatic planes of all sizes, from indoor to giant scale IMAC, and I would like to get a new radio, with more possibilities. I was looking at the Futaba 12Z, however, I can't find anything at Robbe's website, and many european shops have stopped selling it. Is the 12Z discontinued or something? Maybe remplaced by the new 12-FG.

I think the 12Z seems better than the FG, however, what are the main differences between them?

Thanks for your inputs.

Juan

It is hard to say. There is very little information available on the 12FG.

The FG is the Flying Giants version. Of course it's better.

Re: Futaba 12Z vs 12-FG

I have been looking at these two radios for the past few weeks and I can't seem to see many major differences to explain the $400 price difference. I know the 12Z has a larger screen and a nicer battery, but those two things don't seem to explain the cost difference alone. I keep thinking I am missing something.

Is anyone else considering these two? I am leaning towards waiting for the 12FG to come out (hopefully soon!) but part of me is still not sure and wants the 12Z. Curious to hear other opinions.

Re: Futaba 12Z vs 12-FG

I was wondering this myself.

Based on this chart http://www.futaba-rc.com/radios/feature-compare.html, the FG has one less timer (2), an SD card instead of CF, no inflight mixture, no logic for switches (illogical switches?-just what I need), and no inflight needle setup (same as inflight mixture?).

Also, the FG has two rotary dials to the Z's three, but two more trims.

I only did a quick comparasin of the table of contents in the manuals, but they seem identical on features...

z has metal case...FG has plastic.
Z has location adjustable sticks (ie: you can move the "center" of your sticks to wherever it is comfy for you.. not available on the FG

Any chance the 12FG has the older 1024 processor in it as opposed to the G3 2048 that's in the 12Z? I can't find anything to confirm or deny that, but in the 12Z and 14Z the G3 is proudly displayed, so methinks that may be the big ticket difference.

The 12FG program is staggered down from the 14mz-12z radios which after the 137update are very similar in functions. The 12FG don't have logic options on the switching but its still an updateable radio so this will probably change like the 14mz-12z that didnt have it first up. All these radio are great for you wont be stuck with a dinosaur in a few years for functionality, love the Internet update system, you cant loose.

And it will do 1024 as well, just select it in the model setup.

Re: Futaba 12Z vs 12-FG

The 12FG is is intended to be an alternative to the 12Z.....Many of the 12Z features are the same, but differences include a smaller Mah battery, ( and of a different shape and size ), no case, and some slight switch differences...subtle things to lower the cost of the radio and make it more affordable to those that want to go above the 9C but not pay a "premium" for the upper range radios.....
There really isnt a whole lot of difference though......

will they both accept 2.4 modules the same? The FG is shown as 72 and 2.4, is there a difference between the 72 and 2.4 versions? Is their an advantage of 2.4 on FG vs Z vs 14MZ?

The FG will accept the 2.4 module.....when its available but the same radio will be available in the 2.4 version in about a month and a half ( or so ). The 72 FG version is available now.

What I want to know is what are the differences between the 12FG we can buy now and the 12FG that will come with 2.4. Are they exactly the same once the module is installed or will the 2.4 version have an antenna in the normal place etc?
