SoloShot2 Review

Lots of us want to get good video of our planes and the (good) things we do with them. I recently heard about the SoloShot2 and it sounded like just the thing, of course that was them talking and what I found was a little less enthusiastic. Actually a lot less. Read all about it,

Me to, but at least you aren't $600-something in to find out! Sometimes our best guesses pretty much suck! But, I'll go out and rip holes in the sky with my Edge and life will be right again.

I was wondering how well it would work to record a freestyle- now we know it won't.

Sounds like it's just not quite matured yet. I suspect they'll get it all worked out .

I have recorded over 9 hours of flight with the SoloShot2 now and it really seems that vertical is a huge problem for it. I just did not see that coming or I would not have invested that much money in it. I had a corporate friend that was interested in the outcome who did help out some and I guess they got their money worth knowing now that it won't do what they want either.

Anyway, I will keep playing when I have time to see if I can "expand" the window that it can work in. Maybe they will get it fixed if it is not a limitation of the vertical motion motor and gearing. If there is a breakthrough I certainly will add that to the review.

I was curious as well for the same reason as you, airplane reviews.

Thanks for your honest opinion, for now I'll hold off.

Soloshot has released new firmware for the base and tag plus revised setup instructions, both on their site now. I am updating everything, printed out the setup instructions and hope to et out to the field to give it a try this evening if the weather holds off.

Looking forward to your update Tom; best of luck to you in the hope that you wont be stuck with a white elephant.

Got weathered out last evening so no SoloShot test but am hoping for this evening, again if the weather cooperates a little bit anyway! I would have braved the winds yesterday but thought the lightning might have prejudiced the SoloShot performance, and mine.

Solosshot made "improvements" that I found out about through another forum, not their support or owners email that you would think they would notify of such an improvement. Anyway, I did the updating per their on-line instructions and gave it another go.

There is hope anyway, for the unit-maybe, not their support system

Just a quick update. I received several emails asking if a faster plane might make the SoloShot2 track differently and while I thought it would be worse I had not tried it so went through the new setup (new firmware installed) and repeated the test on my AeroWorks 50cc Edge 540. Results were as I suspected, a little worse.

I purposely held the Edge in a steep climb once to give the SoloShot2 more time to "catch up", thinking the plane was almost stationary to the camera with the exception of climbing. No dice, what appears to be a vertical tracking limit persists.

Just a quick note: SoloShot has released another update that says it addresses the vertical tracking limitations. BUT, you have to follow the link in the email to get the right instructions as those differ from the instructions for the Base/Tag on their site. I include the link from the email below for those looking to update. I hope to try the new firmware on Saturday.
