No, they all most certainly do not use Lithium cells. A lot are still sold with NiMH packs, mostly Toyota which currently sells the most hybrid vehicles

Back to the subject... Seems this happens to wires that are not tinned/coated. I used to see this happen when using Ni chemistry, but the wires that were not tinned were subject to this more easily. Not saying it prevented it all together. NiCd's were always reliable in cold weather. LiPos loose their discharge rate in my experience (cold weather flying only). I like the A123's or LiPos depending on the setup, I'll keep my LiPo's in my jacket/pocket/warm truck prior to using them with success.

Yes, bare copper was more prone to black wire than tinned copper but the tinned wire still corroded. I use to do RC service work many years ago and I always had to do a black wire inspection when doing any kind of battery work. I even saw it get into things like pot connection wires, etc. in transmitters. The main problem was that the black wire affected cables were extremely brittle and the wire would just crumble inside the insulation in bad cases. The condition usually affected equipment that had sat around some time unused where in actively used equipment, it was a rare occurrence.

Age and environment can cause it too. Many probably have experienced this with your trailer wiring harness on your vehicle.

Nothing wrong with NiMh
Many of us Q500 racers use them due to the compact size - AAA's , I personally use the 1200 mah in my quickies
Many people neglect battery maintenance ......and that's where the issue lays
