Don Smith 1/4 Scale P-47 Thunderbolt

Hi All,

Looking at starting the Big P-47, Just wondering is there any thing i should be aware of before i start, I know there is a few errors on the plans?

I have plans, Parts and Laser cut wood,Looking at moki 250 to power it and to keep it at 70lb, Does this sound possible? I know Mannys is 72lb with a Quad 3W. And his flys amazing.

Be great to hear from Manny or anyone else who have finished it, Pics would be amazing.

Cheers Lee.

Hi Lee, I just stumbled across this and wondered if you ever built the p-47. I have a Don Smith all framed up with landing gear installed. The plans totally suck! basically scratch-built most of the plane myself. Wing ribs didn't fit plus fuselage jointers didn't fit. Anyway just picked up a dle 222 and hopefully get it done by this summer. happy New year

Yes there is, have been though the 159 pages haha

But since I first posted I’ll most likely sell the cowl. Canopy and plans as this model is huge and needs a moki and I’m not sure if I can input that sort of capital and not be scared to fly it lol,

I was looking at this as a father son project but sort of never happened.

But I do have dons p-51 all cut up and with all parts and plans and that is a nice size I brought the plans for both models about 12 years ago but under estimated the work and investment required ahahha

Basically just retracts and tail gear cost me the same as a 100cc pilot rc model lol as the Aus dollar is not going well against usd or euro etc

But I have a few other projects I’ll be doing namely a ehmw bellanca xxl so that’s this year one

The big issue on the Don Smith p51 is finding a seven inch spinner
There was one thread the builder burnt the fuse he built for d/s p 47 because it warped
He had the ziroli plans blown up to the same size and built it using the d/s cowl and canopy

Yeah she is a off spinner, I think Sierra still do them , but I have a guy here is Aus that will spin them up and Cnc a back plate.

I do recall that build where he built a warp such a shame just because a stupid few mm piece moved from under the stand off

The Ds model does seam to fly well
Here is a video
Madien flight Don Smith 112 " (4 min 17 sec)
