Re: First Scratch built Foamie - 5.9oz!! NICE!!

For this one (ver 2)
I am installing an Eflite 250, running 300 mha 2 cell packs and have 6g servos in it.
hopefully that will keep the weight pretty low.

Ver 1 was designed to handle the larger equipment and batteries bewcause I had them laying around.
Its nice to have a few planes to fly, when you run out of packs on the 5oz... you pull out the "TANK" at 6 or 7 oz and HUNT unsuspecting GWS slow flyers.

Re: First Scratch built Foamie - 5.9oz!! NICE!!

lol i hear that! So sleep, i think i already asked you, but are you coming to the
greatplanes E-Fest in febuary? you need to be there! I want to see this 5 ounce
foamy in person!!
here is my latest design that i'll be starting once i get back from my trip...
Its in the "draw a line, erase, draw it again, erase," stage right now,
but it wont be long. e-flite 250, pheonix 10, spektrum 6100 rx, dymond 4.7(2),
JR S185 6g(1), and 350mah 2S lipos. i'll be doing all of the "lightening" tricks
to all of the electronics, milled out airframe, and with any luck, should stick
right around 4oz or less...thats all a rough estimate though

Hi sleepy c

Your Foamy looks very cool.

I have yet to make my first foamy plane. I want to ask you what thickness of depron did you use for this plane i am planning to build a small 35" foamy plane for indoor F3A & 3D.. also i see that you have cut the depron parts from inside to makitlight weight what type of paper have you used to cover the depron?

Thanks.
Harry.

Its not cut out and covered.. its milled out, meaning you remove only 2/3 of the foam in the milled area, which leaves a paper thin area of foam.

here is the thread that I learned the technic from:

Looks good.. how did you arrive at your design?

On my ver 2 I took everything I didn't like about the first one and tried to fix it.
Is this design a combo pack of "this worked" and "this worked" so lets put them together?

Nice design Chikn! I especially like the design of the fuse (see below : )

I would think about your wingtips a bit more. Regardless of the aerodynamic effects of those tips, breakage might be a problem.....

Re: First Scratch built Foamie - 5.9oz!! NICE!!

thanks guys! Sleepy, I just kinda started drawing the basic outline that i wanted
and once i got the outline down, i started measuring top to bottom, left to right,
middle, things like that. I wanted something that was perfectly symmetrical
with the fuse, like having the exact same side area on the top and the bottom sections of the fuse.
I did alot of studying of other airframes that really seemed to work, and kinda went from there, so its kinda hard to call it my "own design".
We'll see where it goes though.
Thanks Match, i'll re-think the wingtips..i see now where they could fail, thank you!
if you notice anything else that I should change, let me know!

Hey..

are wheels and landing gear worth the weight?

i dont usually install landing gear on my foamies because i cant quite figure out how to make the gear light enough...I will put wheels on this new one, but i dont quite know how i will do it yet.

Sleepy, IMHO, wheels are a bonus. Like Huckin said, I'm not sure how to do it really light. If you find something really light that works, I'd like to know.

For landing just hover it in close and pluck it outta the air. My Clik! has only made 2 "belly" landings. Once because I was hitting LVC and the other was my buddy was flying it and chickened out of the hover-catch method.

Keep us posted on how you (or anyone else, for that matter) make out with landing gear.

Cheers,
Dave

I saw a lot of planes using skids instead of wheels at the JR indoor Fest. they seemed to work well and would be less weight than wheels I think. I think lg is a good thing for indoor flying but not so good for outdoors. just my thoughts.

ATMO For any indoor flying you absolutely have to have landing gear!

For really simple gear, use fiberglass rod instead of carbon(3/32"), and use .032 wire for the axle. I use the ultra light 1" wheels that several vendors are selling right now with spoked construction..... After bending the axle to accept the wheel, I rough up the end that I'll bind to the gear and I tack it in place with thick CA. Then I go back and wrap the joint with kevlar thread much the same way a fishing rod guide is wrapped onto the rod.

Very strong joints and ultra light.....

To reinforce at the fuse, I cut a dime shaped piece of 1/64" ply. I then drill two holes in it on the diagonal for the gear to go through.

The pictures below should help explain and if not, check out this thread...

https://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/...5-build-2.html

Skids are great unless you fly off a turf or rough surface field. Then they tend to dig in and tear up airframes....

Re: First Scratch built Foamie - 5.9oz!! NICE!!

One thing I have found from prototyping foam is when I tried to toe the SFG in or out it caused ill effects in tracking. This issue cleared up when I put them paralell to the fuse. I am still tinkering with drag brakes on the fuse/wing.
I am going to have to try that copper tube hole saw method. Much better than having a new version re-cut on the cnc.
