Giant P-51 Mustang destroyed on take off

A very expensive electric conversion destroyed within seconds of take off. Even the most experienced pilots make small mistakes which can have disastrous consequences.

CRASH ! Giant scale P-51 Mustang DESTROYED on maiden flight (2 min 39 sec)

Looked like it never got any speed. When the turn started, I thought uh-oh!

That looks a lot like what happens when you build bad habits flying foamies then go to a big warbird that flys like a warbird.

That was my thought too. It looked like it was unstable right at take off. That was a beautiful plane too.

Too bad but he broke a cardinal rule; lose not thy airspeed lest the ground rise up and smite thee...

Very first mistake was putting an electric motor in a warbird.. isn’t that against the law! Lol

Yep!I second that!
Bad enough when you have no air speed but then drop a wing to turn. Bummer. Nice looking Stang he had there

Maybe someone would explain to the numpties of this world, if you turn down wind without adequate speed or enough power to compensate, you lose airspeed and will stall.

100% pilot error.

makes me feel better about the very lousy landing I had with mine on Saturday. looks like he held that elevator just a second too long and what he intended as correcting aileron stalled the wing. it's actually a very forgiving airplane.

Too sharp a turn with not enough airspeed. The Hangar 9 60cc P-51 is the smoothest flying giant P-51's I have, but it is still a Mustang and MUST be flown as one.

Not quite. Turning downwind in and of itself doesn’t make you loose airspeed but it does cause an increase in ground speed, so it appears the plane is moving through the air faster than it really is.

Secondly, wings stall because the angle of attack (AOA) gets too high, AKA: the critical angle of attack. The textbook definition of the AOA is the difference between the chord line (line drawn between the leading edge and trailing edge) and the relative wind. The relative wind is either the direction the air is moving over the wing or the wing through the air, depending on how you want to look at it. To define AOA a little more simply, it’s the difference between the direction the wing is moving and where it’s “pointed.” AOA is controlled by the elevator. The more pull, the higher the AOA.

The reason everyone thinks flying too slow makes a plane stall is because flying slowly requires a higher AOA to maintain the same amount of lift. We have two primary ways of manipulating lift: AOA and airspeed. Decrease one and you have to increase the other if you’re going to maintain your altitude.

An airplane maintaining altitude, whether in a turn or straight and level, produces as much lift as it weighs, multiplied by how many G’s it’s pulling if in a turn. If maintaining altitude, bank angle controls the G loading. Straight and level would be 1 G, a 30 degree bank is 1.2 G’s, 45 degrees is 1.4, and a 60 degree bank is 2 G’s. So a plane in a 60 degree bank at a constant altitude is requiring its wing to produce twice as much lift. To do that you either have to speed up or increase the AOA.

Groundspeed controls the radius of a turn. Increase the groundspeed and the radius of your turn gets wider, so when turning downwind many people mistakenly pull up harder (increase the AOA) to compensate.

The cause of the crash is really simple: The pilot pulled up too hard and stalled the wing. The reason it rolled was due to the fact that it was yawed to the left a bit, either too much left rudder in the turn or one of the left turning tendencies clockwise propeller rotation produces. That’s another topic in itself.

If that was the Corsair or any other big Mustang and the like, it would have been over long before that, the reason it flew as long as it did was that wing is extremely forgiving
