ESM P40 with ROTO Motor 85FSI

A long discontinued model, however a new build opportunity for me. I have several ESM airframes and like the composite fuselage, scale appearance and great flight characteristics.

This will be my first ROTO Motor and I have to say it is a beautifully crafted piece of machinery.

I'm looking forward to getting this bird put together and in the air. I welcome any input as I navigate through the build process....

One of the neat features of the ESM P40 is the adjustable motor mount. It is a cylinder that slides within the fuselage and epoxied in place once at the desired position. This provides infinite adjustment for just about any motor without having to modify the firewall.

Pictured is the cylinder in its final position along with my machined offset plate which is needed as the ROTO Motor is so long...

Motor Test Fitting

A couple of pictures showing the test fitting of the motor. This thing is HUGE!!

You can now see the need for the offset plate!

Cowl test fit

A quick test fit of the Cowl and a sneak peak at how menacing the P40 looks with its huge cowl and nose cone....

So far minimal modifications needed to get the motor and cowl mounted and aligned. I did need to straighten the cowl ends where they meet with the fuselage and removed about 3mm of material at the bottom of the cowl for a perfect fit.

Elevator servo installed

Another feature I like is the stabilizer mounted elevator servos. Pictured is the post instal of a Hitec HS-5245MG (mini servo).

Not my first choice of servo, but one of the few that would fit within the cavity.

Functional Exhausts

I'm a sucker for functional exhausts, so the P40 will certainly be getting a set.

I have purchased the below pictured exhausts that were sold by Jtec and no longer made/available. The quality isn't to my standard (no offense to anyone), so I plan on using these as a template to machine a much higher quality billet set. More to come on this particular project....

I think they would be ok, The surface is a little rough But the real ones would be too,

Your could smooth them up and polish them? Get the Dremel out

I need to get back to work on this project. I got distracted with a SkyWing ARS300 build along with some routine fleet maintenance delays...
