if you have to spend twice as much to get a better airframe it's money well spent IMHO.

I agree that you get what you pay for. The MX2 is definitely a bang for buck (rather than top of class) airframe.

I'll fix mine again and get it flying. I've already reinforced it a fair bit so this time around it's going to need some work. I'm not that surprised because I've absolutely thrashed it over the past year.

I think it's a good thing having a cheaper airframe sometimes - it means you become less scared to try new things once you're used to it!

Well look at it this way if you get 200 flights out of a $400 airframe that works out to $2 a flight, I know someone with a dolphinco 50cc yak 54 with over 300 flights on it and it's still going strong, However that has been used for imac and not 3D.

If you glue in balsa fillets both sides of the firewall with hysol the firewall can't come loose

If you fiberglass the engine box correctly before fitting the engine you should not have any problems, I glassed mine with 2oz cloth and have over 400 flights and still as strong as when first flight. Photo is before triming after glassing inside of engine box.

Cheers

Yeah that's totally true. And it's how I feel about my DolphinCo extra now. I've flown it so much I feel like it owes me little (not nothing, but little).

It just depends on what you want. If you want to buy a plane that is likely to be a great performer and will last the distance, then I think the $700-$900 bracket for a 50cc airframe is the way to go.

On the other hand if you are looking for a thrash toy and are not afraid of getting down and dirty with the epoxy then spending $500 on a 50cc airframe is probably the way for you to go.

I'd be scared to spend less than $350 however. ;-)

Of course this thread is about 30cc airframes and perhaps that makes all the difference. For example I don't feel like my 30cc SBach was any better than some of the cheaper things I've flown in that size.

Hey Ghost,

I've similarly fibreglassed my motor box too (although not as neat a job!). The main problem with mine is further back in the fuse - behind the firewall. The structure inside the fuse around where the motor box joins into the fuse / wing tube is cracked and broken, so the whole motor box moves.

So I'll have to keep fibreglassing further back, and add in some stock to bridge the fractures.

When I fly this thing again, I'm going to abuse it even more! Should be fun...

Tim

BTW - I don't thing smoke oil helps either (although, I did fuel proof the whole structure pretty well).

Tim,
I will agree that the smoke oil don't help. I reinforced the inside and outside of my 2nd and 3rd before doing anything else. I'm grounded at the moment as I have just had an Op on my lower back so I an't moving to well at the moment.

Cheers

Hey Ghost,

No good at all about your back. I hope you're on the mend!

In hindsight, I think I would've put even more reinforcement on the MX2 straight off the bat. Harder to do once the model has been flying, built up oil deposits etc.

I will get around to fixing the MX2 in the next week now that my 60cc is set up pretty well. I like to focus on one at a time!

Tim,
I'm in the process of converting my MX2's over to HV servos and power, I use DXS9 JR gear with Spektrum receivers, what did you do with regard to the Opto cutoff for the engine as they are not HV compatable, or have you found one that is.

Cheers

Hi Al,
Changing over to HV gear in the model with new alloy servo arms, they also have a pinch bolt in them to keep every thing tight, especially when using servos with 20kg power.

Cheers
