The good news is that you may find the Hobbywing V4 to work or else you'll have to settle for the SPIN Pro which has a disappointing acceleration setting for 3D throttle pulsing.

The bad news is that the V4 200's that I bought are not cheap and there are no guarantees when it comes to the Q80. I sold my Hackers and bought the Xpwr60 and an Edge 160.
Damn. I have a an HV160 and an Xpower 60cc. What are the recommended settings???

At least I was able to put 6 flights on the 91 Extra and 3 on the 76 MXS in today's warm weather. Dressed up the Extra with a black Falcon 24x12 prop from NWRC.

Were you using firmware version 4.22?

Yes and I have a bunch of flights on my Castle Edge -Xpwr 60 combination on my 91 Extra. Had to have been a short of some sort.

Happened moments after plugging in the packs.

Actually the Q80-8m / Edge 160 combo worked great on firmware 4.22 last weekend on a test bench. Great response and pulled 4800-4900 watts on a 24x12 PJN with no communication loss.

Something went wrong as I never spooled the prop on the air frame.

Going with a Gecko 150hv. I know someone using the combination and getting close to 5500 watts on 24x12

Castle has/had a pretty bad reputation amongst the heli crowd for this type of thing.. I like Castle as a company but this isn’t new. Castle Cremations....

Glad nothing else was damaged other than the ESC...

Yes, firmware version 4.22 and the rest of my settings look like this:

The PWM setting at 12
Throttle response Med 5
I disable the current limit
Motor start power Med 59
Motor Timing Normal 5

Also, the Xpwr60 is really a 28 pole motor with 24 stator poles, just like the 28 pole Hackers. So when you are using a controller that has pole setting, use 28. And if you are looking at the Castle log CSV readout to analyze data, consider 28 poles when making the conversion from the Speed column to get true RPM.

I find that the Hacker will run with the Castle for a while. Then they won't. Higher load props cut this time down, and some won't run on the motor at all. I had a problem running a 24x12 PJN on the Q80-8M smoothly from the beginning and went with the 24x10TH for a while. I eventually lost the Ice2 HV160 too, but did get a season out of it with the 24x10TH. The 215Kv 7M on 10S never really had a problem with the 24x10TH but we only got about 4775W from it at 37v.

Let me know how that works out for you. I ended up going with the SPIN in the last Hacker Q80-6L I had but I ended up giving the combo to a buddy who was not concerned about the 1.5 second acceleration. The Q80/SPIN combo seems to be bullet proof, but I'm sure that slow throttle response would bite me eventually.

So what is your favorite ESC that performs best with the Xpower 60?

I went with the Edge HV160 since Chris said it would work great with the recommended settings, which it does. I've gotten the motor up to 7112W with a 26x8 PJN. Not recommened of course but the prop was pulling 42 pounds on my Rapala in a ground test.

The 24x12 PJN should be great on this plane. I'm just lurking hoping to pick up an AUW.

I can't say how durable the motor is yet, but it's smooth, cool, and efficient to at least 6000W.

These fires are why I am so paranoid when soldering bullets. Always worried I have a bad joint.

I use my soldering iron for other things now. I use 6.5mm bullets on everything for 6S to 14S and use a torch.

With bullets all around I can easily create any cell and capacity configuration.

I fill all the male and female bullets first with solder and flux, then heat them back up to attach the tinned wires.

I buy batts with T-connectors, cut the plate and wire out with diagonals, then heat the wire until the plate comes off leaving the wires pre-tinned.

I spend more time setting up and breaking down everything than actually soldering now. I hate using a soldering iron and was never good at it.

Here's the Q80-8M / ZTW setup on a 24x12 PJN - great throttle response and input watts in line with a XPWR 60. This is from a friend. I'll be ecstatic if I get similar power and throttle response. Sorry for the crappy cell phone video.

Q80-8M with ZTW Gecko 150hv (0 min 21 sec)

Nothing wrong with those peak values, or that throttle response with an 8M. Thanks.

I'm the opposite, I am paranoid about any solders that were not done by me.

I cut off all factory (or secondhand) connectors and start fresh.
