Rubber gaskets, if trapped in a groove like an o-ring, do not crush. Rubber does not compress, it deforms. O-rings actually do squish as they deform into a rectangular space and the air in the corners compresses. A properly designed flat gasket seal can be very effective and is actually preferred for some applications. Think of our carbs...they are sealed with gaskets, not o-rings (except for the needles which need to rotate) For the Fiji water bottle, an o-ring seal can definitely work, but it very much relies upon the surface quality of the top of the lip of the bottle's opening.

Bear in mind that Fiji bottles and soda bottles withstand high pressure, seal very well, and their caps do not use a rubber seal. It's softer plastic(PE or PP) to a harder plastic (PET) and it's also not a face-seal.

There's another gentleman on this site who began producing similar fittings after PSP stopped. I purchased some and they are really nice and quite comparable to PSP.
