B-52 down in Guam, Crew members missing

Sad day here at Barksdale AFB. Thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the crew onboard the B-52 that went down in Guam. I'm not sure of how many are still missing and as of this morning, I only heard of two found that didn't make it. Hopefully they will find others that made it out in time. God Speed to those guys just doing thier jobs to defend our Great Nation!

the story here so far.....

The bodies of two B-52 crew members have been recovered from the site of a crash in Guam, Barksdale Air Force Base said this afternoon.
The fates of four others on board the bomber were not known. A search of the Pacific Ocean was continuing today.

The identity of one of the dead has been determined but is being withheld pending notification of relatives, Barksdale said in a statement.
The B-52 was part of a group of Barksdale planes and crews that are rotated in and out of Guam as part of the United States' continuous bomber presence in the Pacific. It was en route to fly over a parade on Guam when it went down Sunday evening, Shreveport time.
It was not carrying weapons, the Air Force said.
Searchers, who worked through the night, located a large area of floating debris and a sheen of oil at the Pacific Ocean crash site, authorities said today.
One of those aboard was Col. George Martin, an Air Force doctor who was stationed in Guam, his family said today.
The Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, Drug Enforcement Agency and authorities on Guam have been searching for crew members.
"There's nobody that I have talked to yet that has any thought but to keep looking and hoping they'll still be able to find somebody," Robert Brooks, a search and rescue specialist with the Coast Guard, said.
The names of the crew members have not been disclosed by the Air Force.
Family and friends wanting information about the situation can call 318-456-8400, Barksdale said.
The crash occurred Sunday night, Shreveport time, about 30 miles northwest of Apra Harbor, the Air Force said.
The last crash of a B-52 was 1994 when a bomber practicing for an air show crashed in Washington state, killing four crew members.
The B-52 is the second bomber to crash this year on Guam, a U.S. territory located nearly 4,000 miles southwest of Hawaii. In February, a B-2 crashed shortly after takeoff. Both pilots ejected safely.
The Liberation Day Parade that was scheduled for a B-52 flyover, marks the day when the U.S. military arrived on Guam to retake control of the island from Japan during World War II.
The Air Force said a board of officers will investigate the B-52 crash.

Bossier Bob... sad to hear about the crash. I grew up in Monroe LA, and Barksdale was always in the local news. It's a very stratetic base for our government, and there are lots of brave airmen over there making all of our lives just a little easier. I pray for the families of the missing.

I heard about this this afternoon from a colleague. Very sad situation. Our prayers go out to the families of the crew members. Any word on what position the two recovered members were flying?

I've been in contact with some of my Buds from KBAD.....so far I also haven't found out if I knew anyone on the jet. I suppose I will though as the community is small and we all know each other.

My deepest wishes go out to the families.

Bob if you find out any more news let me know ASAP

Thanks

I tried to get in touch with Worm to see if he knew any of them. I'm sure he does but can't talk about it yet. Charles is another local r/c club member/ buff driver, but haven't seen him in months. I have a couple friends in Guam now, but haven't had an e-mail returned yet. If I hear anything, I'll post what I can, but also respect any privacy needed at this time. I just hope they find the rest. They might be waiting for a lift home, hopefully. You may be able to get some info by calling that number, Sam. Since you're AF and previously stationed here, you have a better chance of finding out anything before I do.

Understood.....I tried Worm and RZRback also. No responses yet. I'm sure the bases are tight lipped for now. Once we find all the crew members (safe and sound I hope for the rest) then hopefully we can find out what happened as the BUFF is quite a reliable plane

Now, as of 9:00 pm CST, they are saying 2 confirmed fatalities and the chance of finding the other four alive are not good. Just absolutely terrible. Hard to believe that as strong and reliable the BUFF has been, an H model at that, would crash en route to a parade fly over. That just aint right. Still no release of the crew names or thier positions, other than the Doctor that was onboard stated in the press release.

Most unfortunate. I was with the 4300 PBW at Diego Garcia during Desert Storm when they lost one 15 miles from the island on the way home. Always a tragedy to see fine young people cut down doing what's right.

I just got word from our FG member Flyingrazorback. He is a B-52 pilot and is currently in Guam. The good news is that he is still in Guam! That's a big relief as he is a local club member stationed here at Barksdale, and a great guy. Glad to hear you're ok bud! The news there is, however, not very promising. Just keep hope and prayers up for those not found yet.

I haven't heard much except 2 bodies were found (some reported 3 but now they are saying it was only 2).

I believe that they are moving to search and recovery vs search and rescue.

I'm going into work today and my CC is a Buff guy so he might know more, but I doubt it since we are not really in that community anymore.

Looks like they found all six. No survivors. The most sad part of the aviation business.

Dave that article says they only found 2 and presume all 6 are dead.

I have not heard if they found the other 4 bodies yet.
