Listen to what these economists, people who think they know than us about how economies work, said in this well known Commie leftist magazine:

Good thing we know better than these guys!!

One also has to remember that the Chinese have been losing manufacturing to the 'even cheaper' Asian countries like Malaysia, Vietnam, etc......if the Chinese and their low cost position can't compete what makes anyone think that U.S. manufacturing will 'magically' start building plants and making things here?

Unless of course we'll start to impose tariffs on EVERYONE and EVERYONE will impose tariffs on the U.S.A ...... if that's what happens we will be the second generation to know what a FULL BLOWN DEPRESSION looks and feels like

Kraft,EK Logitrol, they were American made but the cheap Japanese radios drove them out of business.
Tariffs do work by forcing those companies move to the us
The American auto manufacturers have done their best to move manufacturing out of the us while Toyota has moved in and employeing Americans

The current tariffs on electronic and r/c stuff are I believe China only. All that does is get those companies to move final assembly to someplace else with a cheap labor market. It’s not coming to the US.
Unless as Hinkley Bill says we make all the tariffs apply to everyone. In which case I refer you back to Smoot-Hawley again. Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Because we can't compete due to price as a result of slave labor used to produce those products overseas? His point is accurate though, in that it's insane to tariff items which aren't made here as a way to balance a trade deficit. If you want people to buy American, there has to be a comparable product made here to buy. And BTW.. the modeler is VERY guilty of not caring.. Just look how many people buy DLE instead of DA purely on price. DA is a USA company and people will still buy the Chinese knockoff because it's cheaper, and will then lament the fall of US jobs.

The company said the layoffs and plant closure were a direct result of US tariffs on goods imported from China, including important parts that Element uses to put together TVs.
I'm calling BS on that. For one, it is cnn. They will write and do anything to put a hate spin on Trump. Second is your trying to tell me a tariff imposed last month killed a company in less than 30 days? The company didn't try any cost cutting measures? Didn't try a new business model? Don't have extra cash to carry them through a tight time. There is a ton of holes in that story. For instance obummercare has caused huge issues with the health care system. In fact the company I work for has spent years restructuring and cutting cost in order to survive. We even joined with other types of networks because obummercare killed their line of work but joining forces helps make both stronger.

That story is like saying you were fired from your job and the bank takes back your house the next month.

Google "element electronics winnsboro sc" and see where that takes you. There is plenty of truth to the story regardless of your personal bias against CNN reporting it.

There is just no way a company can just about fold up in less than 30 days. There is way more to the story that is not being told that has been ongoing.

Yup everybody is just stupid. I guess those people in South Carolina must be also lib’s

Hakan Samuelsson, president and chief executive officer at Volvo Cars, discusses President Trump's proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum, his investment in their South Carolina plant, sales growth, their subscription concept, the future of the diesel engine, the Geely-Daimler ties and Volvo's partnership with Geely. He speaks to Bloomberg's Matt Miller on "Bloomberg Markets: European Open" from the Geneva Motor Show. (Source: Bloomberg)

Volvo has built a massive new factory in the lowcountry outside Charleston, South Carolina. When it is fully ramped up sometime in early September, it will employ 4,000 people, and will be the primary assembler of the all-new S60 sedan, and later the next generation of the full-size XC90 SUV.

At the opening ceremony Wednesday, in a massive building a quick stroll away from the vehicle assembly buildings, former South Carolina Governor and current US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikky Haley joined current Governor Henry McMaster, Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson and the Swedish Ambassador Karin Olofsdotter.

Its not JUST the "slave" labor....it is also the environmental regulations, air and water quality standards, that handcuff American companies when compared to Asian countries among others that do not have to (or want to) comply with those standards adding cost to manufactured products.
The USA yearly trade deficit dollars with the World is between 550 and 800 Billion , depending on which reporting agency you wanna believe.....MEANING, WE import wayyyyyyyy more than we export......tariffs will hurt other countries that import here (with tariffs ) way more than it will hurt us.......there are countries that are already standing in line to renegotiate their trade agreements with the US.
I figured this thread would become politically charged right from the start.
And no matter what gets posted here, till this thread gets closed, will not change anybody's mind.
