Hope this my first post works …

I would like to join your build thread.

First discovered foam early November ‘06.

Re: Gramps builds with foam, The Cut

Foam model building is less than six weeks old here and I welcome all constructive criticism.

First off…
What do you use for glue on this blue core fan fold foam?

Gramps Weigh In

…Re… what glue do you guys use…

Adrain,
Gorilla Glue, wow! THANKS! Yes, I have some on hand, but never gave it a thought with respect to soft foam glue up. I will give it a try. Gramps

Here is my weigh in …
Being rather empirical, I like to publish the technical stuff after the fact :>)
2.75 + 6.5 = 9.25 oz

Gramps Paint Booth

The paint booth is next…

Lets add a little color to all that blue stuff.
This technique worked great on balsa and seems to do well on foam.
I use a Testors single action (value series) airbrush, free air (super value series) from a local truck stop and Liquitex, Basics (value series) acrylic cut about 50 percent with Windex (on sale twofor). My mask is scrap foam, no two models lQQk alike. That paint booth did not set me back much either. Vent system, tank, regulator and gages? Well, another story.

Looking good. I went through 1/2 a bundle of blue foam in about 6 months this year. Yep foam can be addictive.

Love the build, but that scale is about the best thing I've seen in the threads in a long time!

Gramps; Fire wall, PullPull, Hinge

While that paint sets up, how about a couple firewalls…
I used a drill press with that circle cutter but a hand held drill motor and clamp will getherdone!

…and…

Hardware for the rudder pull-pull system…
Top left rudder control horn (from larger servo days).
Middle left remember the Z bend?
I use braid fishing line (zero stretch) and Palomar knot (easy and almost double line weight strong) it can be tied in the dark with wet cold hands. Some caution is required with braided line. If this line is pulled through your fingers it will cut skin quick like a new #11 X-Acto blade.
To tie the Palomar requires a common over hand knot (through the tackle eye) then a loop back over the eye and it does not matter what is on the other end of the line.
To snug this knot, use fingers, pull both sides of the line at the same time, pull slow, pull gentle, use water for lubrication else braid friction will cut, burn and destroy the knot. If the knot hangs before it is complete use an ice pick, careful not to puncture the braid, open the knot, add more water then continue pulling both sides of the line until snug.
Finally, use pliers not fingers to clinch this knot (not too tight, it only holds a few ounces here not a 20 pound fish)! AND pull ONLY from the tag (unfastened) side of the line NOT from the working side.

…and…

Hinge bevel cut…

…and…

My progress to date.

Re: Gramps Discovers Foam

Conclusion

Less than two months ago I discovered a totally new (to me) RC model airplane building material and since then the pleasure of building and flying . . . !foam!

A few years back I read about increasing induced drag on the wing and for the judicious cost (in weight) I add an extra servo (now one for each aileron) and a receiver with channel six so I could realize the effect (affect (result)). BUT … had no comprehension the result ‘induced drag’ has when applied to a super-lite model's rudder and elevator.

RC foam model building and flying may be more fun than a human being should be allowed to have.

Hey Gramps..... way to go. Got something you need to try on your first Depron plane. Loctite sells a version of Gorilla glue called Sumo. Its faster to cure and forms a white bead that looks just like Depron. My local Lowes has it.Check th Loctite website for other dealers.
