Or as noted 1200 feet. However, for the sake of regulation of sUAS FAA has determined that only the Class E at the surface associated with an airport (enclosing magenta dashed lines) is considered E that requires permission. This makes sense since the max height in Class G is 400 feet agl.

All class e airspace is controlled regardless of altitude. Class g is the only uncontrolled airspace.

With the twist that the way both Part 107 and Section 349 are worded the only Class E airspace you need permission to operate in is Class E2, the airspace associated with an airport that fully encloses the airport and which extends to the surface.

Other types E are moot since we are not authorized to exceed 400 feet agl in Class G, which is overlain by the other types of Class E airspace.

Confused yet? Keep in mind that Congress and the FAA came up with this stuff.
