Radio Quality

I have a question if some radios on 2.4 frequency are more prone to interference?

I have had some interference at our local field in the same area more than once and last Saturday it caused a lock out and I have ZERO control, the 40% CompARF was a total loss..

2.4 isn't bullet proof like some think.I had battery power leads running to close to rx and it did go into fail safe. But that was when doing a range check. Also you still need to keep your ignition and wiring away from your rx and wiring I found.Just like the old days.

At our field we have two areas the guys using Spektrum radios claim to have issues, and the Taranis flyers claim issue with one of the spots. I use JR and constantly hoover in these areas and I have never had a glitch. We only have a couple using Futaba, I have not heard them complain.

While not immune, they are less prone to external interference. Not sure if there is a difference between brands or not. What can be an issue is internally generated problems. Bad wiring, crappy connections, servos arcing, etc. can all cause issues. Another problem can be blanking the RX. Unless the TX antenna "sees" the RX antennas you will get a hold. Carbon fiber, big hunks of metal (engines), large fuel tanks, etc. can all block a signal.

Depending on the circumstance you may, or may not, be able to recover.

One important thing to always do is set your failsafe. Set a predictable state so that if something goes south you can more easily figure out what happened.

Hold means loss of signal, blocking, etc.
No hold but los of control means something inside the plane causing the issue.

Getting a hold repeatedly in the same place tells me something was causing a loss of signal as opposed to interference. People need to be aware of the null off the end of the antenna. That can cause a hold.

The orientation is so important on the TX! I had a few issues on my 18mz when I had the TX antenna pointing out to the right. When ever the aircraft was at just the right spot on the right end of the box I would get a brief lock out.

sorry to hear about this...before 2.4 we had a similar experience at one of the so cal flying fields. on sunday, and only on sunday, planes were dropping out of the sky. took a few months but it was traced to a BMX track only a few hundred feet from the field and the turn marshalls were using FM radios. Also on 72 near the Mexican border some JR frequencies were locking out. Only JR. Good luck tracing and isolating the source should it reappear.

It was a Futaba 10J, I changed to from JR12X. Quit a few other pilots are also having issues on the North end of our field, at least four brands of radios used.

Hitec Aurora since they were introduced here. Never a glitch that I know of - other than occasional nonsense caused by low batteries or similar that was easy to trace. If it's struggling, it'll start beeping a warning. At that point it's done it's job just fine as far as I'm concerned.
