DA150 Alternatives?
I had a thread started back in the Cirkus days but want to start another discussion here on this topic.
I am closing a deal on Jeff's 40% CAP and am now starting to get ideas for an engine. I am not a hardcore 3D'ers but can huck it around enough to have fun. With that said.. What are good alternatives to the DA150? matt |

Re: DA150 Alternatives?
It is all up to what you want to run. We cannot tell you what to run at all. If you want to Mac Daddy BADDASS set up, then get a 3W 150 and run KS 1090's. Ask Razrback about that set up!!! I've seen DA's on 1090's with 2 blade props, and even with good throttle management, it still RIPS!!! If you like the noise, then go for it!!! But a comparable 3 blade on either engine would be a 28.5x12 Mejzlik, or a 30x12 Biela or Fuchs.

Re: DA150 Alternatives?
Ok...Ok.... I'm a DA Guy for life. I just like American made!
But I have to say A Guy I fly with has a 3W 157 XI competiton on one of the biggest 40%'s I'v ever seen. It pulls stumps vertical. Wicked power. |

Re: DA150 Alternatives?
Why would you want an alternative most of the motors are around the same price go with the service that`s what I say

Re: DA150 Alternatives?
Price difference isn't enough to justify scrimping on such a critical part of a large plane. Save, sell or pimp yourself out, scrape the cash and go DA, this is one way your garanteed to have zero regrets. I have never heard a guy with a DA say "wish I would have bought a ........"

Re: DA150 Alternatives?
There are a lot of 150's around for good prices, all of them are great motors, one is not better than the others, and I have had all of them at one time or another. I had to go with the 157 for the new Extra due to the power and smoothness, but you're right, they don't give them away!! If it's not enough I will look at the Kroma 180

Re: DA150 Alternatives?
Like supermodel56 said, there are plenty of used DA and 3W 150's out there for a good price. Just be careful if you buy used. You are probably better off buying new, if you can scrap up the change for a 157 it is definately a step up. Me and my buddy have 3 here at our field and they are definately bad ass...Jonas

Re: DA150 Alternatives?
Persoanlly I don't know if I would but used again or not, I know too many people that have been burned by it. But when I did the last time I make it part of the deal that the seller sends it to a service center to get a clean bill of health.....no matter if it's just been there. IF the dealer finds something wrong, he fixes it, pays for the fixes and you then pay him for the engine and the service center sends it directly to you, Or he can opt to back out of the sale, no loss to you but time. IF there is nothing wrong and it gets a clean bill of health, you pay for the service fee and you know you have a good engine. I did this with my 3W160B4 that I bought and I'm glad I did. One carb needed rebuilt and while it was there, since it's a dual carb engine, they synched the carbs, and the thing runs like a champ. It was all fixed at the sellers expense. I've yet to put in in the air, but it's been run twice on the ground for a small amount of time. I know there will be no unexpected problems from this engine.
Neo Out!!!! |

Re: DA150 Alternatives?
I dont disagree that the DA150 is a fine engine but what i dont get it is that people charge the same for a used one as a new one.
The whole break-in argument is bogus if you ask me, the engine is "Used" and should be priced accordingly matt |
