DA-120 ?

Sooooo....what'cha all think of that new DA 120, huh? Sure is pretty!!! Would LOVE to have one!!! But, is it really so good that I have to shell out 1300 bucks to get one or would I be payin' fer "John Deere paint"? Not tryin' to start a war here and I'm not flamin' any particular engine or manufacturer,...just thought I'd ask the 'powers-that-be' on FG who have way more experience with gas engines than me, if this engine is really so much better than other gas twins of similar size that it's worth forkin' out that much more dough! I mean, after all, ya really can't see it once the cowl is put on nor can you identify it by the sound it makes in the air. That leaves us with performance to look at. Money is definitely an issue now in this day in age and I need to know if the performance is so advanced that it's worth saving my pennies for it instead of settling for something less expensive. Let the debate begin.

gains of 500-600+ rpm over the DA100 with the same prop
sounds like just a bit more than 'new paint'

DA is still going to make the 100L as the 120 might not be needed by everyone.

The difference in price isn't that big a jar of pennies

American made, best original design (imo), great service, knowlegable staff and supports the sport in a BIG way.

So in short, Yes it's worth it, now that your decision has been made Start Savin.

Fine Print: Unless you really want to buy a very nice low time, used, pre L DA100 These are very rare and highly desirable, I know where one is available but don't tell anyone or post it here, pm me
(oringinal design denotes not stolen or blatantly copied, mfg'd with cheaper pts and child labor.)

Re: DA-120 ?

Radrich, you are in Louisville??? I am across the river in Southern IN, surprised we have not met.....anyway I have had all DA's since flying gas back in 2002. Never regretted paying an extra bit of $ for their motors and let us not forget about that service. I had a ZDZ 80 once, needed service and I will just say that was my last ZDZ. Anyway, come over to SO IN this summer.

Re: DA-120 ?

If you have a plane that will finish out in the 25-27 pound range the 120 really isn't needed - still nice to have, but not needed. Anyone that says their 28-30 pound 100cc plane has plenty of power with a 100 has probably never flown a 26 pound 100cc plane...anything over 28 pounds will definitely benefit from the extra power. In fact, I have been REFUSING to look at some 100cc 'class' planes, like the EF110 Yak, AW 300, TOC Yak, etc because they are, IMO, too heavy for a 100cc engine to have the kind of thrust-to-weight I enjoy with my lighter 100cc planes. Now that the 120 is going to be a reality, they, and several other planes are back on the 'wish' list.
Besides that, nearly a full pound lighter than their older DA-100 while putting out nearly 600 more RPM on the same prop, and only a few bucks more expensive make it an obvious choice if you are in the market for a new engine.

Re: DA-120 ?

Here's another way to look at it. Not everyone gets to fly at 1000 ft. ASL so for the guys up in the 5000 ft. mark where I flew for 2.5 years, the extra power and lower weight will benefit them without getting out of their comfort zone of going with something else. This is also not to say that BME and 3W for example don't make a good motor, but some pilots may prefer to stick with DA because they want to and there's a market for a light 120 for sure.

Why not just get a Zenoah G62? That's what guys flew third scale planes with way back when. Besides, it's in the cowl so who will see it. You'll save a bunch of money this way.

If you spend a lot less, chances are EVERYONE will see it sooner or later peeking around those broken chunks of fiberglass.
