Fromeco Batteries
Hello,
I have a couple of questions regarding Fromeco Batts. Firstly I read something the other day that they should only be connected directly to a switch then a reg then the reciever. How come they can't be connected directly to the reg then switch then reciever?? Also what is the deal with the little jumper on the side of the new Peerless packs. I have purchased 2x 4800mh packs and just wondering what to do with this little jumper. Many Thanks Jonathan |

Re: Fromeco Batteries
Well I can answer your question!
Because I was the guy who posted origionally. My friend hooked my Brand new packs like this: Batt - Reg - Switch - Rec. When you do this the batteries are sending 7.4 or more volts to the reg , which in turn is regulating that voltage and then sending it to your on/off switch. Your reciever won't see any juice, but the REG is a constant draw on the battery. So over time the draw will take the batteries below a chargable voltage. (in my case less than 1 Volt... brand new.. never used DEAD - non chargable batteries!! ) So by hooking it up : Batt - Switch - Reg - Reciever, you can "turn off" the voltage to the reg, hence your battery is just chillin. Then when you turn on the switch the juice goes over to the reg and then sent to the rec (or ignition which ever pack we are talking about.) So DON'T make the mistake... This is proper: Batt - Switch - Reg - Reciever Hope that helps. |

Re: Fromeco Batteries
You don't want battery to reg then switch because the regulator would constanly be drawing a small amount of current. After a while it would drop your voltage to a dangerous (to the pack) voltage level. As for the Peerless packs and the "jumper" I'm not positive, but it's likely a way to balance and monitor individual cells. I've been using the Relions and love them. Kurt says the Peerless are better, that's saying something, because the others are great.

Re: Fromeco Batteries
Thanks for the reply's guys.
Ok that I already knew about the regs drawing a small bit of current. Its just I have mine setup this way and thought there might be something else, I disconnect my batts from everything after every flying session anyway so no probs there!! Good idea though about running through a switch, I wasn't sure how much voltage could be pumped through your average HD switch. Plus I use the Smart-Fly Power Expander and Turbo Reg, so its not really an option. With the peerless packs, I am not so sure about the jumper being for individual cells. From the quick look I have had it said something about turning on and off?? Not sure if it disables the electronics or the whole pack. Probably should open one and have a play aye!! I completely agree about Fromeco packs they are damn good batts. I already have 4 Relions and they have been great, so high hopes for the Peerless!! Also a real bonus with the Peerless being able to be shipped via air (ie International) Cheers Jonathan |

Does fromeco still make the regulated reliaswitches????? I have two and they are great but I cant see them on their website anymore.

Re: Fromeco Batteries
Notorious, Fromeco still makes the switches. They are available for a few dollars more when compared to just hte regulators. . OR . .you can buy the regulators, open the heat shrink, find the SW solder points, and solder in your own switch leads, then re-heatshrink the assembly. I just did that with a regulator, though it voids any warranty.
As for batterypack-switch-regulator, I just use a Zero Loss Connector with a velcro tie and disconnect the packs after I fly. That way, I don't accidentally turn the switch on when I am not flying. It's only necessary to disconnect one lead from the pack, so you may want to insert a single electrical "banana-style" connector in line. They are more than capable of handling the amperage loads. |

Re: Fromeco Batteries
Another thing that I don't know how important it might be is if you do Battery+Reg+switch when you charge your battery using your charge jack you have to go through regulator then battery unless regulators are only one way and you can pass current through them to charge your battery, you might hurt the regulator! or not being able to charge the battery in full!

Re: Fromeco Batteries
3 reasons why you don't do Batt-Reg-Sw but do Batt-Sw-Reg
1. As some mentioned above, Regulator will drain power from batt and if you ever forget to disconnect, you get very nice hitech paper weight. 2. If you have a charge switch, that port becomes useless for measuring batt voltage. All you are going to get is regulated voltage wether it be 5v or 6v. 3. Field charge becomes combersome as you need to disconnect the batt before charge as you can't charge through the charge port. * If you do field charge, be sure to balance cells at least every 10-20 charge or so. Even if you don't field charge, it would be a good safety measure to balance cells. If you have a balance port then the job is easier. If you don't, you need to peel the shrink and measure each cell voltage. If they differ by 0.05 or more then you hot wire higher cell to a cheap electric motor or flashlight bulb and drain the cell voltage until both are equal. |

Re: Fromeco Batteries
Yeah I run Batt - Regulated switch - Rx. I have to unplug the batts from the regulated switch if I am going to go a long period without flying. I got my regulated switches about 6 -8 months ago and am thinking of getting a few more so I was checking that they still make them.
Having said that only yesterday I found I had a dead pack. I had forgotten to disconnect one of the packs and I think I must have pulled the pin and flag out of the switch inadvertantly turning the Rx on for 3 days!! (Doh) Anyway I now have two new peerless packs on their way. Looking forward to trying them out. |

Reza:
Think of Voltage Regulators as a check valve with a restrictor attached so it has an input and an output. One can't put a charge on the output side and expect it to reach inputside. However, if you must have batt-reg-sw then I suggest you put y extension ( heavy gauge ) between batt and regulator so you can use y extension to charge. |

I just switched to the Cermark HD switches so that I dont have to worry about disconnecting the packs all the time..I can charge right thru the switch |
