Wiring gas can switches

Hello gents. I have a question and I hope someone can help me out. My gas can had two switches on it and they were light up switches so of course there was three wires running to each switch. Well one switch was for fueling and the other for de-fueling. Well last weekend one of the switches broke so I couldn’t find the exact switch so I just replaced them with regular switches and did away with the grounding wires that went to the switches. Well now all my pump will do is fuel. What did I do wrong and how can I fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciative. Thanks

Did you try reversing the polarity on your defuel switch?

How would I do that without shorting the pump out?

Get a DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw) switch. It will have 6 connection points arranged in 3 rows of 2. Like this

1 2
3 4
5 6

Connect the wires like this
(1) Battery + | (2) Battery -
(3) Pump + | (4) Pump -
(5) Battery - | (6) Battery +

If you want a 2nd switch as an arm/safety switch, get a SPST (single pole, single throw) switch and wire it in line with the Pump + wire, between the control switch and pump.

In case these upgrades are more than you were after, let's take a step back. If you want to fix what you have show us the best picture of both switches as they are now wired including the 2 wires you eliminated if possible. I bet we/I can see the glitch and get you back in line quick enough if you didn't want to upgrade. Otherwise, the DPDT setup shown is ideal for this setup.
