Pilot RC Build thread & Review - Extra300
Well Zac and I went shopping at Desert Aircraft the other day to pick up some more Red Line oil and walked out with a new Pilot RC Extra 300 88" model in red and black
Since Zac is getting some airtime on the new 2.6 compy I thought it would be a good time to throw the DA50 into a new airframe to have fun with it at the many clubs we fly at and but mainly as an IMAC plane for Zac. (fat chance of getting him off the Comp ARF) I wanted to do a build thread for all the guys at the local aero clubs we fly at such as TMAC, LARCS, and SMF at Coolum. Think at last count Zac and I are members of 4 aero clubs Also we get a lot of guys wanting to make the change from glow to gas and asking us about models and whats a good one to start with etc, so I thought I would post this build thread for you guys and that way you can use it as an "online manual" on how to put one of these birds together and see they are very easy and you dont need expensive power tools or years of building models to get one of these in the air. I might add my son Zac will be doing some of the build as well to help him get some building skills. Also if any of the experienced builders out there have any suggestions please feel free to add a comment. The gear I'll be using for this model is mainly whats already in Zacs Sukhoi except for the rudder servo being upgraded to a new Futaba S9156. |

The model comes in 2 boxes which are well packed.
You just have to be carefull of the tacks sticking out when you pry open the box not to damage the model when you take it out. I used a small hammer to knock them down before I took anything out. Last thing I needed was holes or rips in the covering. |

The covering on the whole plane was perfect!
Not a single bubble or wrinkle. I probably will still go over it with a covering iron anyway as I was taught by a very wise old aero modeller. |

The acessories with this kit are fantastic and its not even the carbon fibre option.
The horns supplied are nice and I like how they packed all screws and parts into an "ammo belt" style packaging. The main wheels look really cool with nice alloy hubs. |

Re: Pilot RC Build thread & Review - Extra300
Pilot RC supply a fuel tank fully fitted and plumbed, but like every other good builder dont trust something you cant see like your clunk and whats holding it on. I am sure its fine but being brand name guy I opted to install a Du-Bro tank with Du-Bro Tygon brand fuel tubing.
If you want to save bucks use whats supplied but remove the fuel tank bung and double check the plumbing INSIDE the tank! The model also comes fitted with a fuel dot but rather than the push-pull type it screws in and out with a small amount of thread. I may stick with this or replace it with a sexy DA fuel dot I have spare. |

Re: Pilot RC Build thread & Review - Extra300
First up I always like to get the landing gear on to get the model off any stand to avoid hanger rash.
This job I left to young Zac. BTW this kit didnt come with a manual, you have to downloaded it from thier web site. Which I dont mind as you can zoom in on a pdf file to get more detail out of the photos plus print it off if you like. As far as content, they could improve on it a bit. Some things are left to guess work but its a no brainer where stuff goes. |
