I used to fly Aerotow but our field is no longer suitable and I have not taken the time to travel to aerotows at other fields.

I have a 3.4M Ventus 2C set up with a nose release.

46% pawnee tug

Here is what we have been playing with this summer. We have a Mintor 220 up front. Haven't gotten a lot of time on it yet, but its been a blast so far. It flies great by itself and is very stable with a glider on the back.

Here are a couple of good scale soaring/aerotowing resources:

The biggest lesson I learned while doing aerotow was not to "fly" the glider. I simply keep the wings level and let the tug drag you along. On glass ships I use spoilers to keep from overshooting the tug. Aerotow is a blast. I need to drag my scale gliders out and get going again!!

Just aquired a 40% Bill Hemple J-3 that was turned in to a Mulligan (large round cowl). Has a 160
twin for power with electric start. (perfect safety feature). Should be able to pull just about anything out there. 2013 is gonna be a great tugging year in the N.W. Will post pictures soon.

I was thinking about constructing an Electric powered tug to pull up sailplanes that would be under 10 pounds.

Any advice on how to size the aircraft and the power plant?

I was thinking that a Telemaster might be good.

We would be taking off from a grass field that does not have a groomed runway so I would probably need BIG wheels to deal with the somewhat rough ground.

Any thoughts?

Telemaster makes a good tug. We have a Lanier Husky 106" on 10S that pulls most anything we have.

The key to being a good Tug pilot is listening, flying smooth and looking as scale as you can.
Keep your turns very big and smooth and communicate to the sailplane pilot to stay on the
outside. Take a nice ride up to about 1600 to 1800 feet and stay by the Hawks. They know
where the thermals are!!!!!!!!! Dont forget your chair cause your gonna be up there for
awhile.
