The charger itself can regulate the voltage a bit to keep the charge current where it is....

Just got back from Frys, I am going to take this newer one apart and build it with the different resistor the 1ohm 10watt and see what kind of voltage i get....And I may change the resistors on the one I have I picked up some extra.

Trust me you are fine, not worth even bothering with it. Just keep using it and have fun.

In the future you can install a fuse on your 12V yellow wire in series with the banana jack. That way if that happens you just need to replace the fuse. That's what I'm doing on mine. You can use a fuse holder that you can access from the outside of the PS box. Just drill a hole for it.

Had to upgrde my home computer power supply so I made the old one into a charger power supply. Works awesome. now I can buy a new Cellpro 10S and not pay $129 for their power supply. Thanks Mike.

Re: FrankenPower! Building a 12V Power Supply

I picked up a Logisys 550w power supply. I did the mods that Mike did but I am using a 10w 12ohm resistor(Frys was out of the 10W 10ohm) other than that I did exactly what the build said to do. I am having trouble though. I turned it on hooked up my charger started charging and then the charger said error input voltage low. I am using a thunder power 1010 charger and im charging a 10S 5000mah lipo at 5amp. When I lowered it to 3amps it started to charge the battery. But I want to be able to charge it at 5amp. Do I need to install a different resistor? Maybe a 25W 25ohm? Im really not sure what I should do any ideas?

The lower the ohm rating the higher the voltage
use a 25X5 or 25x1 resistor

Re: FrankenPower! Building a 12V Power Supply

Say watt?

SByrd,

Did you plug into the 5 volt supply side? No? The resister is put on the 5 volt side to give the switching power supply a load to start up and run? It should have little, or no effect on the 12 volt supply side.

The resister you have is 10 ohms and is rated at 10 watts. So, if you do have it on the 5 volt supply side,

V = IR => or, I = V/R

It is drawing I = 5 volts/ 10 ohms = 0.5 amps.

Power (P), or watt rating, is,

P = IV

So, if you are drawing 0.5 amps at 5 volts,

the wattage requirement is P = 0.5 amps (5 volts) = 2.5 watts,

which is well below the 10 watt rating. It should be good.

Your power supply on the 12 volt side, applying the same equation, but rearrranged, should be able to take,

I = P/V = 550 watts/12 volts = 45+ amps total,

although, on each pair of plugs it is likely you can take only a fraction of that, depending on how many pairs (yellow and black) you made and many bundle wires you connected (1-yellow and 1-black, or 2-yellows and 2-blacks). Look at what amps your power supply can handle on the 12 volt side. It should be on a label on the outside of the unit.

How did you lower the charging rate of you charger from 5 amps to 3 amps?

Re: FrankenPower! Building a 12V Power Supply

Yes I have it on a red 5v to a black goung wire. It all works I just cant charge above 3amp on my charger. My charger alows me to change the chrarge rate(amps) from I believe 1amp to up to 5amps. At 12V my power supply can handle up to 25amps. I only made 1 set of plugs for the power supply and I have four 12V yellow wires and four black ground wires on each female banana post.

i think i put a 10watt 5 ohm in mine to up the voltage,it does make a difference in the output
