I'd say live and let live. The only lame hobby is the one you participate in and aren't enjoying.

Translate to fishing to make it less personal. Some guys define fishing in terms of multi-thousand dollar bass boats and high dollar tournaments to see who can catch the most in one day or weekend. Others spend hours learning to fly cast perfectly and hike hours through swampy land to get to the perfect hole. Others throw a line into the nearest pretty spot, tilt the straw hat over their eyes and go to sleep. IT IS ALL GOOD.

I'm not a train guy and don't think I would find enjoyment in building a set. However, the fellow you referenced apparently enjoys it a great deal and is proud of his creation. I think you owe him some gratitude for taking his time to let you in on the marvel he has created. Here's the thing about hobbies, they're about taking time for yourself to do something you enjoy. This gentleman has found something he enjoys to do and that is not lame.

I can't believe I'm reading a thread about which is better : toy trains or toy planes. Were getting close to rock bottom.

We all need something to do in order to find our center. Golf, fishing, flying toys, trains, sporting events, hookers, crochet... something. If it takes your mind off of work, home, and the other repetitive things in our lives, then it's probably a good thing for YOU. I can't pass judgement on anyone else's hobby, other than to say whether it interests me personally or not.

Tiger Woods plays golf for work, so he had to find something else for a hobby. Ellen didn't approve, now Tiger has a bad back... I guess you need to pick your hobby wisely!

The live steam stuff is just cool as hell, I don't care who you are! Especially when its something like a narrow guage Shay with all the drivers and gears on the side, blowing out plumes of coal smoke....

And no, it won't hover!

The only lame hobby I can think of is where you spend your time bashing the pride and joy of other hobbyists.

A perfect statement if ever I read one.
