Also, aren't the parachutes actually the seat cushions in those planes?

FAA regs only reqiure parachutes to worn when two or more people are in the plane doing aerobatics. I am not required to wear one while flying the CAP either for fun or at airshows. (IAC rules require one at contests) If I was flying a 2 seat Pitts solo, no chute required...put a passenger up front, then we would both need one.
Now, does this make sence or is it smart? NO. last thing I want to do is ride in plane from 3000 feet on fire or minus a tail ro something.
FYI, also now days they are very comforatable and light. Mine was molded into my custom seat, so I can't fly without mine anyway.

Sweet thread! I love watching full scale aerobatics. They have a grace that is extremely hard to emulate with our pint sized likeness'. <-- is that a word??

I wouldn't cross any of those aerobats- their tough as nails IMHO. Go blend yourself for 15 min. and then pop the canopy with a big smile on you face for the crowd. As Cool and calm as Clint Eastwood after a gun fight!

Flyinrazrback: Can you all do the occasional loop or roll if the airspace is clear- or can you only do that stuff in a "training zone"?

I didnt see it but one of my friends did. Will Curtis (who flys his Honda sukhoi in the UK) did a rolling loop a few weeks back at an airshow, now thats some impressive stuff. That said i must say my favourite manouver is the Cobra to a hover/very high attitude harrier which pilots like Will Curtis and Kirby Chambliss are famous for as well sa others. It is a great video and its even better that the pilot is from England

Parachutes are a must. A good friend of mine piled up a Decathalon about 10 years ago. Flying around inverted, started to lose altitude, went to level off and pulled the wrong stick direction. Instantly ripped the wing off the plane. The guy that was instructing him came out of the plane, but my buddy Brian didn't. He was only 22 or 23 when that happened. Safety is a must.

A friend of mine was telling me a story that happend when an average joe bought a gliding lesson at his gliding club while he was instructing, while at about 1800ft the glider malfunctioned (somehow, i cant remember, i heard it a while back) and the pilot and his tutor were forced to bail out. Except the guy being taught how to fly said "wait a second", they stayed in the plane for another 5 odd seconds (while the plane was falling) and then he jumped out followed by the instructor. On the ground the instructor grabbed the tutor to get an explenation why he made them hold on for 5 seconds. The reason was that the guy was putting his SUNGLASSES in his pocket because they were new. Now, to me thats just retarded

Spinner, to do aerobatics in military aircraft, we have to go to a MOA, restricted area, etc. The T-38 I am flying takes some pretty big space for a loop as I start at 500 kts and it takes about 9500-10000' of altitude to complete it. Now I wouldnt say I hav never rolled one a couple times going to and from places in the US. The T-38 is not for the faint of heart for aileron rolls, it will surprise you with its blistering 720 degree per second roll rate.
